Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

At 8:00 AM the following morning, while David and Maggie were sipping coffee on the deck of their lake house, believing I was lying incapacitated in bed, a matte-black town car pulled up to the rear executive entrance of Solomon Construction headquarters in downtown Maplewood.
I stepped out wearing a tailored navy suit, tinted sunglasses, and my father’s gold signet ring on my right hand.
Beside me was Evelyn Vance, carrying two thick leather portfolios containing emergency corporate injunctions.
We took the private executive elevator directly to the twelfth floor—the boardroom floor.
The office was buzzing with low-level activity. For three years, David had slowly replaced my father's trusted department heads with his own sycophants—corrupt financial directors, sub-contractors tied to shadow holding companies, and a head of legal who answered directly to Maggie.
We walked unannounced into the main boardroom, where a secret subcommittee meeting was currently taking place.
Sitting at the head of the table was Richard Hayes—the chief financial officer David had appointed two years ago. Surrounding him were three representatives from the Apex Syndicate, a predatory private equity firm known for buying distressed infrastructure companies and stripping their pensions.
Hayes dropped his pen, staring at me as if he had just seen a ghost. "Mrs... Mrs. Solomon? What are you doing here? Mr. David said you were taking medical leave for the next month!"
"Did he?" I asked, walking calmly to the head of the table. I placed both hands flat on the polished mahogany surface, leaning in close to Hayes. "Mr. Hayes, as the seventy percent majority shareholder and sole legal heir of Thomas Solomon, I am revoking your executive clearance effective immediately."
The three Apex Syndicate executives jumped to their feet. "This is absurd! We are in the middle of executing a binding asset purchase agreement signed by David Solomon!"
Evelyn Vance stepped forward, slapping three heavy legal folders onto the table with a sharp crack that echoed like a gunshot.
"David Solomon’s power of attorney was revoked three hours ago by the probate court," Evelyn announced with cold, lethal precision. "Furthermore, the state Division of Securities has just issued a temporary freeze order on all Apex Syndicate transactions involving Solomon Construction land deeds, pending a formal investigation into wire fraud, corporate espionage, and illegal kickbacks."
Hayes turned white as a sheet, his lips trembling. "You... you can't do this... David has the board votes!"
"David has nothing," I said coldly, pulling a high-definition tablet from my briefcase and sliding it across the table. "This tablet contains the full forensic banking audit of every off-shore account you, David, and Maggie established in the Cayman Islands over the last twenty-four months. It also contains the financial trail connecting Apex Syndicate to the illegal thallium shipments imported through the eastern shipping docks."
The Apex executives didn't say a word. They grabbed their briefcases and bolted toward the exit like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Hayes collapsed into his leather chair, clutching his chest, breathing heavily. "Adrianna... please... David forced me! He threatened to ruin my reputation!"
"You helped him destroy my father's legacy," I said, looking down at him with pure, unadulterated disgust. "Security is waiting in the lobby. Hand over your keycards and your phone. If you cooperate with the State Prosecutor within the next two hours, Evelyn might ask the judge not to give you life in prison."
