Chapter 1 - The Examination and The Blueprint

The sterile smell of the clinic did nothing to ease the throbbing in my ribs, but the steady click of Dr. Evans’s camera brought a cold, comforting sense of finality. Each flash captured the truth Daniel tried to bury under department-store foundation.
"The bruising on your ribs matches the impact of a heavy wooden door," Dr. Evans said, her voice tight with suppressed anger. "And these fingerprints on your arm... I’m logging everything into the secure forensic database. Do you need a shelter, Clara?"
"No," I replied, wincing as I pulled my shirt back down. "I have a plan. And I have Detective Ortiz."
An hour later, I met Lena Ortiz in a quiet unmarked vehicle two blocks from the clinic. I handed her the flash drive containing the hallway footage—showing the brief, violent struggle before the door slammed shut—along with the medical report.
"This is enough to arrest him for domestic assault right now, Clara," Lena said, looking at the photos.
"An arrest now lets him out on bail in twenty-four hours," I countered, my voice dead calm. "Vivian’s lawyers will scrub his record, and they’ll come after my apartment with everything they have. I don't just want him behind bars for a misdemeanor. I want the entire empire dismantled. Look at the financial logs."
Lena scrolled through the spreadsheets on my laptop. Her eyes widened as she saw the labyrinth of transactions. For months, Daniel had been siphoning money from his family’s real estate firm, Aegis Holdings, into a shell company called V&D Enterprises, registered in Delaware under Vivian’s name.
"He's embezzling from his own family company," Lena murmured. "But why would Vivian allow it if it’s her company too?"
"Because Vivian doesn't know," I smiled grimly. "Daniel is greedy. He told his mother the money was being hidden from me in case of a divorce, but he’s actually double-crossing her. He's setting her up to take the fall for tax evasion and grand larceny if the government ever catches on. I’ve spent eight years tracing funds for the cartel cases. Daniel is an amateur playing with matches."

Lena looked at me, a newfound respect in her eyes. "What's the play?"
"Today is the lunch," I said, looking at my watch. "I’m going to serve her favorite roast. And I’m going to let them think they’ve won while I plant the final piece of digital bait."
