Chapter 2 - The Taste of Submission

By noon, the apartment smelled of rosemary and garlic. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror, carefully applying the concealer Daniel had bought. It felt like war paint. I covered the purple shadow beneath my eye and the dark marks on my neck until my face looked flawless, plastic, and perfectly obedient.
When the doorbell rang at exactly 12:30, Daniel opened it. Vivian walked in, draped in her usual Chanel tweed, her eyes scanning my apartment with immediate disdain.
"Still so small, Clara," Vivian sighed, tossing her handbag onto my sofa. "I don't understand your stubbornness. Moving into the estate is a promotion for someone of your... background."
"Good afternoon, Vivian," I said, forcing a soft, submissive smile. "Please, sit down. Lunch is ready."
Daniel watched me closely, his posture tense. When I served the roast, pouring the wine with a slightly trembling hand (a touch of theater I added for his benefit), I saw his shoulders relax. His arrogance was returning. He truly believed the beating had corrected my behavior.
"Daniel tells me you’ve finally seen reason about the apartment," Vivian said, cutting into her meat. "We need the liquid equity to fund the new commercial development in the downtown sector. We’ll absorb this property into the Aegis portfolio by next week."
"I was just frightened of losing my independence," I said, keeping my eyes cast downward. "But Daniel made me realize last night... how important family unity is."
Daniel smiled smugly, reaching over to squeeze my arm—right over the fingerprints he had left. The pain screamed through my nerve endings, but my smile didn't waver. "Clara just needed a little firm guidance, Mother. She knows her place now."
"Excellent," Vivian declared. "I brought the transfer documents. You can sign them after lunch."
"Of course," I said. "But before we do that, Daniel, could you look at the digital ledger for the V&D account? I noticed a discrepancy in the offshore routing number this morning while I was preparing the household budget. I want to make sure your mother’s assets are fully protected."
Daniel’s face went momentarily pale. He hadn't expected me to ever look at that account. But to deny it in front of his mother would arouse her suspicion.

"I'll look at it on your laptop in the study," he said smoothly, trying to mask his panic.
He rose from the table, completely unaware that he was walking straight into my trap.
