Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Vances

The federal courthouse was packed to capacity for the trial of the United States vs. Daniel and Vivian Vance. I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a simple, elegant cream suit. I wore no makeup today. The faint, fading shadow under my eye was a badge of survival, not something to be covered up.

Daniel sat at the defense table, looking disheveled and broken. He had lost weight in jail, his arrogance completely stripped away. Vivian sat as far from him as possible, the bitter betrayal between mother and son raw and exposed for the world to see.

When I took the stand as the prosecution’s star witness, the defense attempted to paint me as a disgruntled spouse seeking a financial windfall.

"Mrs. Vance," Daniel’s attorney asked, his tone patronizing. "Isn't it true that you manipulated these corporate records to frame your husband because your marriage was failing?"

"I am a certified forensic accountant with eight years of experience working alongside federal law enforcement," I replied, looking directly at the jury. "Data cannot be manipulated to create thirty million dollars of fictitious routing numbers, biometric signatures, and IP addresses originating from Daniel Vance’s personal devices. Furthermore..." I turned my eyes slowly to Daniel. "...data does not create fractured ribs or finger-shaped contusions on a human body."

The prosecution played the hallway footage. They displayed the medical files. Then, they played the audio recording I had captured on my laptop the morning of the lunch—Daniel’s voice clear and threatening: "Cover all that up and smile."

The jury’s expression turned to collective disgust. Daniel buried his face in his hands. He knew it was over.
