Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Blueprint

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, silk dresses, and the polished clinking of champagne flutes. At the center of the room, standing on a raised dais beneath a massive portrait of his late grandfather, was Steven Vance. He looked immaculate—his tuxedo tailored to perfection, his silver hair brushed back, his face wearing that familiar, arrogant smirk of absolute invulnerability. Beside him sat Eleanor Vance, the family matriarch, her neck draped in diamonds, her posture as rigid as a tombstone.
They were laughing at a joke made by a city councilman when the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom were pushed open.
The laughter in the room didn't stop immediately; it rippled outward from the entrance like a slow, freezing wave. Camila walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, her wet clothes clinging to her frame, her muddy sneakers leaving dark, smeared tracks on the pristine white carpet. Behind her, out of uniform but unmistakable in their bearing, walked Detective Cruz and three plainclothes officers.
Steven’s smile froze. He set his champagne glass down on a passing tray, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the woman he had thrown into the gutter six years ago.
"Camila?" he muttered, his voice amplified slightly by the microphone on the nearby podium. He quickly switched it off, stepping down from the dais with a look of intense annoyance. "What is the meaning of this? Who let you in here? If you're looking for an increase in your alimony settlement, this is hardly the venue."
"I’m not here for money, Steven," Camila said, her voice carrying through the sudden, dead silence of the ballroom. "I’m here for our son."
Eleanor Vance stood up from her table, her diamonds clicking together like dry bones. "Camila, stop this ridiculous exhibition. Your son died six years ago. You had a nervous breakdown then, and it appears you haven't recovered. Security, please escort this woman out."
"The security guards aren't going to help you tonight, Eleanor," Detective Cruz stepped forward, flashing his badge directly in the matriarch's face. "Mr. Steven Vance, we are currently investigating the kidnapping and attempted murder of a six-year-old child registered under the alias Leo Palmer. The boy was admitted to St. Jude’s three hours ago with severe thallium poisoning."
A sudden, sharp gasp erupted from the crowd of high-society guests. Steven’s face drained of color, his hand twitching toward his watch in that old, nervous gesture Camila knew all too well.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Steven said, his voice rising in panic. "I don't know any Leo Palmer. My sister Victoria—"
"Your sister Victoria was caught on high-definition security footage dropping the boy off before she fled," Camila interrupted, stepping directly into his personal space. She could smell his expensive cedar cologne, the exact same scent from the night he left her on Route 19. "She brought Gabriel to the hospital because she realized the poison you've been feeding him was going to kill him tonight. She didn't want a murder charge on her hands, Steven."
"Gabriel is dead!" Steven shouted, his corporate composure completely shattering. "He died in the NICU! I have the certificate!"
"You have a piece of paper signed by your uncle, who you paid off with corporate funds!" Camila fired back, her eyes burning with a primal, triumphant light. "We ran the DNA, Steven. The boy in that room is my son. He is our son. And tonight, your sister exposed the whole disgusting lie."

Eleanor Vance stepped between them, her face a mask of cold, defensive fury. "This is a slanderous conspiracy! Steven had nothing to do with that child’s illness! If the boy is sick, it’s because of the filthy environment Victoria kept him in! My son is the CEO of this company—he doesn't have time to manage the health of a... a bastard child!"
"A bastard child?" Camila caught the slip of the tongue instantly, a cold laugh escaping her lips. "You just said you didn't know he existed, Eleanor. But you just called him a bastard child. You knew. You’ve known for six years."
