Chapter 7 - The Unraveling Footage

While Steven was unraveling in the interrogation room, the state police were executing a comprehensive search warrant at the Vance family mansion in Lake Forest. Camila refused to stay at the precinct; she returned to St. Jude’s Hospital, taking her place in the plastic chair beside Gabriel’s bed.

Dr. Evelyn Rhodes walked into the room at 6:00 a.m., holding a fresh medical chart. The dark circles under the doctor's eyes were deep, but her expression had completely transformed.

"The dialysis worked, Camila," Dr. Rhodes said, a soft, rare smile breaking through her serious demeanor. "We managed to flush the acute concentration of thallium from his system before it could cause permanent neurological damage. His lungs are clear. We’re taking him off the ventilator within the hour. He’s going to wake up soon."

Camila dropped to her knees by the bed, burying her face in the white cotton sheets, her shoulders shaking as six years of buried, suffocating grief finally transformed into tears of pure, unadulterated relief. She held Gabriel’s tiny, warm hand against her cheek, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of his heart—a heart that was strong, beautiful, and entirely alive.

Detective Cruz entered the room quietly a few minutes later, his face grim but satisfied.

"We found the final piece of the puzzle, Ms. Camila," Cruz said, sliding a portable media drive onto the bedside table. "Our tech units recovered the original security server logs from the hospital's off-site storage facility—logs from the night Gabriel allegedly died six years ago. Dr. Harrison Vance thought he had deleted the files, but the automated backup system caught everything."

"What did it show?" Camila asked, wiping her eyes as she stood up.

"It shows Eleanor Vance entering the neonatal unit at 2:45 a.m. with a medical transport cradle," Cruz explained, his voice laced with profound professional anger. "It shows Dr. Harrison Vance administering a heavy sedative to the baby to mimic a flatline response, switching the identification tags with a stillborn infant that had been brought in from a local clinic earlier that night, and wheeling your son out through the service elevator. The footage is clear, high-definition, and carries the timestamp of the exact hour they told you your son’s heart had given out."

"And Eleanor?"

"She was arrested an hour ago at the private airfield in Gary, Indiana," Cruz said. "She was trying to board a private charter flight to a non-extradition country in South America. She had three million dollars in cash and the original trust documentation in her briefcase. She’s being held without bail on federal kidnapping and conspiracy charges."

Camila looked down at Gabriel, whose dark eyelashes were suddenly fluttering against his cheeks. The little boy let out a soft, tired sigh, his fingers curling instinctively around her thumb.

"Let them run," Camila whispered, her eyes fixed entirely on her son. "The world is too small for them now."
