Chapter 9 - Justice in the Spotlight

The trial of Steven and Eleanor Vance lasted less than ten days. The combination of the recovered neonatal security footage, the thallium vials linked to Steven’s private holdings, and the comprehensive medical testimony from Dr. Evelyn Rhodes left the defense with absolutely no room to maneuver.

Camila took the stand on the fourth day of the trial. She didn't wear the drab, faded clothes of the woman who had spent six years hiding from the world. She wore a tailored, emerald-green suit, her hair styled elegantly, her posture straight and proud as she looked down from the witness box at the two defendants.

Steven looked old, his hair turning completely gray in the county jail, his shoulders slumped in a cheap, state-issued suit. Eleanor sat beside him, her face a frozen, bitter mask, her eyes still trying to project a regal authority that had been stripped away the moment the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

"Ms. Camila," the prosecutor asked, his voice echoing in the crowded courtroom. "Can you tell the court what the defendant, Steven Vance, told you three days after your son’s alleged death?"

Camila looked directly into Steven’s eyes, her voice ringing out with the crystal clarity of an unbreakable bell.

"He brought me divorce papers and told me my blood had killed our child," Camila said. "He told me he wouldn't spend his life paying for a biological error that came from my family. He and his mother used my grief like a weapon to throw me into the streets so they could secure a trust fund using the child they had stolen from my arms."

A low, furious murmur swept through the public gallery. The judge hammered his gavel, demanding order, but the moral verdict had already been delivered.

When the jury returned with their final decision, the sentences were historic. Steven Vance was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and corporate fraud, receiving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Eleanor Vance was sentenced to forty-five years for her role as the mastermind behind the kidnapping and financial conspiracy—a sentence that, given her age, guaranteed she would spend the remainder of her life within the grey concrete walls of the state penitentiary.

As the bailiffs dragged Steven away, he turned his head to look at Camila one last time, his mouth opening as if to beg for mercy. But Camila didn't look back. She stood up, walked out of the courtroom, and stepped into the brilliant, blinding light of a Chicago afternoon, where the air was clean, the sky was wide, and the future was entirely hers.
