Chapter 3 - The Morning After

At 7:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a frozen Lake Forest estate, but inside the Whitmore household, no one had slept a single minute.
Grant Whitmore sat at the long mahogany dining table in his tuxedo trousers and a wrinkled dress shirt, his hair disheveled, downing his fourth cup of black coffee.
Across the table sat his father, Charles, still wearing his formal pants, staring blankly at three mobile phones lined up in front of him. Patricia was pacing back and forth across the Persian rug, while Vanessa sat in the corner holding little Ethan, looking terrified and out of place in the grand room.
"Call her again, Grant!" Patricia hissed, stopping her pacing to glare at her son. "Call her right now! Explain that it was all a misunderstanding! Tell her you were under immense stress!"
"She isn't answering her phone, Mom!" Grant shouted, slamming his cup onto the saucers so hard coffee spilled over the wood. "Her number has been disconnected! I called her assistant, I called her gallery, I called every contact I have! They all said the same thing—'Talk to Ashford Global Legal'!"
"This is insane!" Vanessa whined from the corner, her voice trembling. "Grant, you told me she was nobody! You told me her family was dead! You said she had no backing!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Charles suddenly roared, slamming his heavy hand onto the table. The room went dead silent.
Charles stood up slowly, his face gray and drawn. "Do you have any idea what you've done, Grant? Do you have even the slightest clue?!"
"Dad, so what if her father is rich?!" Grant argued defensively, though his voice lacked conviction. "We own Whitmore Properties! We have twenty commercial buildings in downtown Chicago! We have the River North project! We don't need the Ashfords!"
At that exact moment, Charles’s primary secure phone began to ring.
Charles snatched it off the table, hitting speakerphone. "Arthur? Tell me good news."
Arthur Vance, the senior vice president of First National Bank who had been at the party the night before, sounded like he was hyperventilating.
"Charles! Where the hell are you?!" Arthur panicked. "It’s a disaster! At 6:00 AM, Ashford Global’s legal team filed an emergency revocation of all personal trust guarantees associated with Claire Ashford!"
Grant jumped up. "She can't do that! She signed the guarantees!"
"She revoked them based on material misrepresentation and ongoing corporate fraud!" Arthur yelled through the speaker. "Without her guarantees, your risk rating just went to Grade F! The bank's risk committee met thirty minutes ago! We are calling in the forty-five million dollar bridge loan for the River North project! You have twenty-four hours to cure the default or we initiate foreclosure!"
"Forty-five million?!" Grant gasped, his knees hitting the chair behind him. "Arthur, you can't do this! We’re halfway through construction!"
"It gets worse, Grant!" Arthur continued frantically. "Ashford Materials just issued a stop-work order on your site! They’re pulling three hundred workers and all heavy equipment off River North right now! The news has already leaked to the Chicago Tribune!"
Charles grabbed the edge of the table as his chest heaved. "Arthur... please... give us three days..."
"I can't, Charles!" Arthur said, his voice dropping into a fearful whisper. "Nathaniel Ashford called our chairman personally at 5:00 AM. He told him that if First National gives Whitmore Properties a single hour of extension, Ashford Global will pull eight hundred million dollars in liquidity from our commercial accounts by noon. We are a bank, Charles! We have to survive! Good luck."
The line went dead with a loud click.
The dining room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Grant stared at his phone as it began to buzz uncontrollably. Email notifications, news alerts, and calls from frantic board members began pouring in like a tidal wave.

Vanessa stood up, clutching her designer handbag. "Grant... what about the house you promised me in Gold Coast? What about my allowance?"
Grant turned his head slowly, looking at her with eyes full of absolute, terrifying hatred. "Get out."
"What?" Vanessa blinked.
May you like
"GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Grant screamed at the top of his lungs, sweeping a silver coffee pot off the table, sending it crashing against the wall.
Vanessa screamed, grabbing Ethan and running toward the foyer, leaving Grant and his parents standing in the ruins of their grand illusion.
