Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, the glass-walled boardroom of Whitmore Properties on Michigan Avenue was in absolute pandemonium.
Twelve board members, representing the major minority shareholders and institutional investors, were shouting over one another. On the wall monitors, the stock price of Whitmore Properties was tumbling off a cliff—dropping sixty-eight percent in six hours.
Grant sat at the head of the table, his tie undone, sweating through his shirt, while his father sat beside him, looking ten years older.
"Silence!" Charles shouted, trying to exert control over the room. "We are assembling an emergency restructuring plan! We still have our commercial portfolio in the Loop!"
A senior board member, a billionaire investor named Marcus Thorne, stood up and threw a stack of legal papers across the table.
"What commercial portfolio, Charles?!" Thorne roared. "I just got off the phone with our anchor tenants! Deloitte, Kirkland & Ellis, and United Health have all issued emergency lease termination notices under the key-man default clause!"
Grant’s head snapped up. "On what grounds?!"
"On the grounds that your company is under active federal investigation for wire fraud!" Thorne shouted back, pointing an accusing finger at Grant. "Did you really think you could forge Claire Ashford's signature on bank documents and get away with it because she was a 'quiet housewife'?! You arrogant, incompetent fool!"
"I didn't forge anything!" Grant yelled, lying through his teeth. "She knew about those loans! She supported the company!"
The heavy wooden doors of the boardroom were pushed open.
Two uniformed federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), accompanied by three investigators from the Cook County State's Attorney's office, stepped into the room.
The entire boardroom fell dead silent.
The lead SEC officer stepped forward, pulling a gold badge and a thick warrant from his leather jacket.
"Grant Whitmore?" the officer asked.
Grant stumbled backward against his chair. "Yes...?"
"We are serving a federal search and seizure warrant for all financial records, email servers, and personal communications of Whitmore Properties from January 2023 to the present," the officer declared calmly. "Issued by District Judge Miller under Case File 882 regarding grand corporate fraud, bank misrepresentation, and illegal diversion of trust funds."
"Search warrant?!" Grant shrieked. "You can't do this! This is a private corporation!"
"We can, Mr. Whitmore," a female prosecutor stepping up behind the officer added coldly. "Because three hours ago, your former wife, Miss Claire Ashford, provided the State Attorney’s Office with forensic digital evidence—including audio recordings and bank transfer logs—proving that you illegally transferred twenty-five million dollars from her personal account to cover your firm's margin calls."
Charles Whitmore let out a wet, choked gasp, clutching his left arm, his face going terrifyingly pale.
"Dad?!" Grant panicked, grabbing his father as the old man collapsed back into his chair, gasping for air. "Dad! Call an ambulance!"
"Emergency medical teams are already downstairs, Mr. Whitmore," the prosecutor said, her face completely unbothered by the drama. "While your father is taken to the hospital, you will be coming with us to the precinct for formal questioning."
Before Grant could say another word, two officers grabbed his arms, pulling them behind his back, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.

As he was dragged out of his own boardroom past his furious investors, Grant looked at the TV screen mounted in the corner.
A live broadcast showed Claire Ashford stepping out of a sleek black limousine outside Ashford Tower, surrounded by twenty international journalists, looking magnificent, powerful, and utterly untouched by his destruction.
