Chapter 8 - The Remnant of the Past

Two years after Grant’s conviction, I received an unexpected letter at my corporate office.

It was from the social services department of Cook County.

The letter informed me that Patricia Whitmore had passed away following a sudden cardiac event in her apartment. With Charles Whitmore permanently incapacitated in a state facility and Grant serving his fourteen-year sentence, four-year-old Ethan Cole-Whitmore had been placed in temporary state foster care.

I sat at my mahogany desk for a long time, holding the white paper in my hands.

That evening, I discussed it with Julian at our home in Lincoln Park.

"You don't owe that family anything, Claire," Julian said gently, sitting beside me on the couch, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. "After what Patricia and Grant did to you, no one would blame you if you walked away."

I looked at a photograph of little Ethan that the social worker had attached to the file. He had Grant’s gray eyes, but his expression was innocent, frightened, and completely confused by a world that had abandoned him.

"The child is innocent, Julian," I whispered, tears filling my eyes as I remembered the baby I had lost three years ago. "Ethan didn't choose to be born into Grant’s lies. He didn't choose his mother’s selfishness or his grandmother’s cruelty. If I leave him in the system, Grant’s poison wins."

Julian looked at me with profound love and respect. He leaned over and kissed my forehead. "Then let's bring him home."

The next day, through my legal team, I petitioned the family court for legal guardianship of Ethan.

Given my financial stability, spotless background, and complete ability to provide world-class medical and educational care, the judge granted the petition within forty-eight hours.

When I picked Ethan up from the social services center, the four-year-old boy looked up at me with timid gray eyes, holding a small brown teddy bear.

I knelt in front of him, wiping a smudge of dirt from his cheek, giving him the warmest smile I possessed.

"Hi, Ethan," I said gently. "My name is Claire. You’re coming home with me."

The little boy looked at my warm smile, sensing the absolute safety and love radiating from me, and slowly reached out his tiny hand to hold my finger.

"Are there toys at your house?" Ethan asked softly.

"There are endless toys, sweetheart," I promised, picking him up in my arms. "And a big garden where you can play under the sun."
