Chapter 5 - The Shadow Network

By Friday evening, the Vance Family Trust had launched a full-scale forensic audit of all operations connected to Sterling Global Holdings.
Inside the glass-walled war room at Vance Enterprises headquarters in downtown, Marcus and I sat surrounded by a team of forty corporate lawyers, forensic accountants, and cybersecurity experts.
"Sterling is hemorrhaging cash," Marcus reported, pointing to a series of red charts projected on the wall. "When the news broke about the Panama account and the corporate espionage, three of their major international investors pulled their funding. Julian Sterling is backed into a corner."
"A cornered rat is dangerous, Marcus," I noted, reviewing a stack of intelligence reports provided by Apex Command. "What is his next move?"
"He's trying to liquidate his holdings in the northern shipping ports," Sarah Chen, our Chief Information Officer, chimed in. "If he sells those ports to an overseas syndicate, he can raise enough cash to cover his legal liabilities and launch a hostile takeover bid against Vance Logistics."
I set my pen down. "He wants to take my mother's shipping company to save his own skin."
"Exactly," Sarah Chen agreed. "The auction for the northern port leases takes place on Monday morning at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. If Sterling wins those leases, he controls the main trade routes into the region."
I looked at Marcus. "How much capital does the Trust have available for liquid deployment?"
"Two point five billion," Marcus replied with a quiet, confident smile. "Your mother left the reserve accounts completely pristine."
"Good," I stood up, smoothing the front of my blazer. "Prepare the funds. We are going to Chicago. I’m not just going to outbid Julian Sterling; I’m going to buy his debt."
As I walked out of the conference room, my phone vibrated. It was a call from the warden at the County Holding Facility.
"Director Vance," the voice on the line said. "We have David Miller in custody following his arrest for corporate fraud. He is asking for one phone call with you. He claims he has information regarding a physical threat against your life."

I paused in the hallway, looking out over the twinkling lights of the city skyline.
"Put him on," I said flatly.
