Chapter 7 - The Trap at Midway

The rain fell in dark, heavy sheets over the tarmac at Midway Private Airport in Chicago on Sunday night.
A sleek Gulfstream jet bearing the Vance Family crest touched down softly on the runway, taxiing toward a secluded private hangar near the perimeter fence. The engines whined to a stop, and the stairs unfolded.
Four black SUVs pulled up to the stairs, their hazard lights blinking in the darkness.
Suddenly, three dark, unmarked vans sped out from behind an adjacent freight warehouse, blocking the convoy's exit path! Armed men in dark tactical gear poured out of the vans, weapons raised, taking positions around the primary SUV!
The lead contractor—Vance Vance—stepped forward, holding an automatic rifle, pulling open the rear door of the main SUV.
"Director Vance!" Vance growled into the dark interior. "Step out of the vehicle with your hands—"
He stopped dead.
The backseat of the SUV was completely empty except for a small black digital speaker resting on the leather upholstery.
A calm, familiar voice echoed from the speaker:
"Good evening, Vance. I believe you're looking for me?"
Before the contractor could react, high-powered floodlights mounted on the hangar roof snapped on, illuminating the entire tarmac in blinding white light!
Dozens of heavily armed Apex Command tactical officers, flanked by uniformed Chicago Police SWAT units, stepped out from the shadows of the surrounding hangars, weapons trained directly on Sterling's mercenaries.
"Drop your weapons!" a police loudspeaker boomed across the tarmac. "You are completely surrounded! Drop your weapons immediately!"
Vance Vance looked around in absolute horror. He dropped his rifle onto the wet tarmac, raising his hands slowly into the air. His men followed suit, throwing their weapons into the rain.
Five miles away, inside the penthouse suite of the Drake Hotel, I sat calmly in a plush armchair, sipping Earl Grey tea while watching the live tactical feed on my laptop screen.
Marcus walked into the suite, holding a glass of champagne.
"The SWAT team has secured all twelve mercenaries," Marcus reported with a grin. "And based on the encrypted comms recovered from their vehicles, federal agents have just executed an emergency arrest warrant for Julian Sterling at his home in Greenwich."

I closed the laptop screen, feeling a deep, quiet sense of satisfaction wash over me.
"The auction is tomorrow at nine, Marcus," I said, looking out at the twinkling lights of the Chicago skyline. "Let's go buy an empire."
