Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the House

Six months passed.
The autumn leaves swept across the manicured lawns of the Vance Estate, turning the hills into a sea of brilliant gold and fiery red.
The legal dust had finally settled:
Julian Sterling was convicted of federal corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, and fraud, sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal prison. Sterling Global Holdings collapsed, its viable assets absorbed by Vance Enterprises.
David Miller pleaded guilty to accessory charges and corporate fraud. Due to his cooperation in warning me about the Midway trap, his sentence was reduced to three years of probation and complete forfeiture of all claims to any Vance assets or financial support. He left the city quietly, taking a low-level job in a small Midwestern town, entirely forgotten by the high-society world he had tried so hard to infiltrate.
Jessica, the former marketing associate, was quietly terminated from her firm and faded into obscurity after being ordered to pay damages for property destruction.
Under my direction, Vance Logistics expanded into the largest green-energy shipping network on the East Coast, creating thousands of new jobs and donating millions to medical research facilities—including the hospital wing where my mother had spent her final days.
I sat on the sunlit terrace of the mansion, watching the golden leaves fall into the marble fountain.
Elena walked onto the terrace carrying a tray with fresh tea and a morning paper. The headline on the front page read:
VANCE ENTERPRISES ANNOUNCES TWO BILLION DOLLAR PHILANTHROPIC TRUST FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS.
"Director Sarah," Elena said warmly, setting the tray on the table. "You have a visitor at the gate. He says he doesn't have an appointment, but he brought something for you."
May you like
I frowned slightly. "Who is it?"
"A young man named Thomas," she explained. "He says he is the son of your mother's late head gardener. He says your mother left an old wooden box in his father's care years ago, with instructions to deliver it to you today—on your thirtieth birthday."
