Chapter 3 - The Freeze

"You can't freeze my accounts!" Ethan shouted, stepping toward Daniel with his fists clenched. "I am the CEO of Whitmore Technology! My wife has no legal authority over my operational funds!"
"Correction," Daniel said smoothly, pulling a single laminated sheet from his binder. "Claire Whitmore holds a twenty-five percent equity stake in Whitmore Technology under your post-nuptial agreement, which you signed six years ago in exchange for her personal capital injection of three hundred thousand dollars."
Ethan blinked, terror dawning in his eyes. "That... that agreement expired!"
"It never expired," Daniel replied. "Because Claire drafted it herself, and unlike you, she actually knows how contract law works. Furthermore, because you attempted to satisfy a personal liability—specifically, the two hundred and forty thousand dollar wedding contract—using forged documents, the presiding judge signed an emergency asset freeze at six o'clock this morning."
Harrison stepped forward, his face flushed red with rage. "Do you know who I am, Mr. Reed? I have dinner with the Chief Judge of the Seventh Circuit twice a month! I will have you disbarred by noon!"
"You're welcome to try, Harrison," Daniel smiled thinly. "In the meantime, the caterers, the florists, the orchestra, and the venue management for your daughter’s wedding have all been notified that the master agreement bearing Claire Whitmore’s signature is fraudulent. The vendors are currently filing civil liens directly against this estate and against your personal holdings."
Madison gasped, clutching her robe. "My estate? My wedding? They can't do that! It’s my special day!"
"Your 'special day' was funded by bank fraud, young lady," Daniel said without an ounce of pity. "And as for you, Ms. Monroe..."
Daniel turned to face Ava, who had taken a quiet step backward toward the dining room exit.
"Ava Monroe," Daniel said, pulling a yellow envelope from his jacket. "You have been personally named as a co-defendant in a civil RICO lawsuit alleging conspiracy to embezzle corporate funds from Whitmore Technology through Monroe Strategic Holdings."
Ava’s jaw dropped. The leather portfolio slipped from her arm, crashing to the floor and scattering papers across the marble tiles. "This is insane! I'm an employee!"
"You're a shell company owner receiving stolen funds," Daniel corrected coldly. "Here is your subpoena. You have twenty-four hours to produce all financial records regarding Monroe Strategic Holdings, or a bench warrant will be issued for your arrest."
Daniel turned back to Ethan, who was staring at his frozen phone screen in absolute horror.
"Claire asked me to give you a message, Ethan," Daniel whispered, stepping so close he could smell the stale champagne on Ethan’s breath.
"What... what message?" Ethan stuttered.
"She said to tell you that she gave you twelve years of her life, her brilliant legal mind, and her unyielding loyalty," Daniel said softly. "And in return, you gave her a seat at the kid's table. Now... she’s taking the whole house."
Daniel adjusted his tie, nodded politely to Harrison, and turned on his heel, walking out of the mansion as the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him.
Inside the grand foyer, complete chaos erupted.
"Ethan!" Madison shrieked, tears ruined her makeup. "Fix this! The florist just sent a text saying they're sending collection agents to my apartment!"
"Shut up, Madison!" Ethan yelled, turning furiously on Ava. "Ava, what did you do with those tax filings? Did you leave a paper trail?!"
Ava’s face was transformed by raw panic. "You told me she wouldn't check the cloud drives, Ethan! You said she was a meek, compliant housewife who didn't even read her own bank statements!"

Harrison slammed his fist against the marble pillar, his silver hair wild, his refined composure completely destroyed. "SILENCE! ALL OF YOU!"
Harrison glared at Ethan with venomous disappointment. "You idiot. You broke the law to impress this girl, and you picked a fight with a woman who built your entire career. Get our lawyers on the phone. NOW!"
