Chapter 5 - The Fall of Ava Monroe

By Monday morning, news of the financial war within hitmore Technology had leaked to the financial press. Crain’s Chicago Business published a bombshell front-page article: WHITMORE TECH FROZEN AMID FEDERAL FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT ALLEGATIONS.

At 10:00 AM, Ava Monroe walked rapidly through the lobby of her luxury high-rise apartment building, wearing dark sunglasses and carrying two heavy designer suitcases. Her plan was simple: take the midday flight to Miami, access her offshore account in the Caymans, and disappear until the legal storm blew over.

As she approached the glass exit doors, two federal agents in dark blue jackets stepped into her path.

"Ava Monroe?" the lead agent asked, holding up a federal identification badge.

Ava’s heart stopped. "I... I'm going on a business trip."

"Not today, Ms. Monroe," the agent said. "We have an arrest warrant issued by the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. You are charged with wire fraud, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement."

"This is a mistake!" Ava shrieked as surrounding residents stopped to stare and pull out their phones. "Ethan Whitmore authorized every transfer! He gave me that money!"

"Then you can explain that to the grand jury," the agent said coldly, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As Ava was led out to a black police sedan, a pristine black town car pulled up to the curb. The rear window rolled down slowly, revealing Claire Whitmore sitting inside.

Ava glared at her through tears of rage and terror. "You ruined my life! You miserable, bitter bitch!"

Claire looked at Ava through her dark sunglasses, her face calm and unbothered.

"No, Ava," Claire said softly, her voice carrying through the cool morning air. "You ruined your own life the moment you assumed a diamond bracelet was worth selling your integrity for. By the way... that bracelet on your wrist? It was purchased using Whitmore Technology operational funds. The police will be taking it as evidence."

Ava gasped, looking down at her wrist as a police officer unlocked the diamond clasp, sliding it off her skin and placing it into a clear evidence bag.

The window rolled up, and Claire’s town car drove away smoothly into the city traffic, leaving Ava sobbing on the pavement in handcuffs.
