Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Patriarch

With Ava in federal custody and singing like a canary to avoid a ten-year prison sentence, the pressure shifted directly onto the Whitmore family patriarch: Harrison Whitmore.
For forty years, Harrison had built an image of aristocratic perfection, ruling Chicago’s high society with an iron fist, looking down on anyone who hadn't inherited their fortune.
At 2:00 PM, Harrison stood in the boardroom of his private equity firm, Whitmore Capital, staring at three high-ranking federal investigators and his board of directors.
"Harrison," the chairman of the board said gravely, holding a thick folder. "The bank regulators have just flagged five personal loans you took out using Whitmore Technology stock as collateral. Stock that, according to court documents filed this morning, belongs to Claire Whitmore."
"This is a minor family dispute!" Harrison roared, pounding his fist on the glass table. "My son Ethan will resolve this with his wife!"
"Ethan is currently being interrogated by the FBI at federal plaza, Harrison," the chairman countered coldly. "And what's worse, the vendors from Madison’s wedding have filed a class-action fraud suit against you personally. They claim you were present when the forged contract was presented, and that you knowingly benefited from stolen funds to host a public event at your estate."
"That is preposterous!" Harrison gasped, his chest heaving, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. "I am a respected member of this community! My grandfather founded the Lake Forest Country Club!"
"Your grandfather isn't on the hook for wire fraud, Harrison," the chairman said, standing up. "The board has voted unanimously to strip you of your executive powers. We are terminating your management contract immediately to protect the firm's assets."
"You can't fire me!" Harrison shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. "I AM WHITMORE CAPITAL!"
"Not anymore," a quiet, firm voice spoke from the doorway.
The board members turned.
Claire walked into the boardroom, accompanied by Daniel Reed and two state marshals.
Harrison stared at her, his eyes wild with fury and disbelief. "You... you little peasant! You dare step into my boardroom?!"
"It's not your boardroom anymore, Harrison," Claire said, stepping up to the head of the table. "I just bought seventy percent of Whitmore Capital’s distressed debt from First National Bank. As your primary creditor, I am taking control of this office, your estate in Lake Forest, and all associated assets to satisfy the outstanding legal claims."
Harrison stumbled back, grabbing the back of a chair for support. "My... my estate? You're taking my home?!"
"The very home whose gates you had security throw me out of," Claire reminded him, her voice smooth as velvet and cold as ice. "You told me that night that my name wasn't on the guest list, Harrison."
May you like
Claire leaned over the table, looking straight into the broken eyes of the man who had tormented her for twelve years.
"Now... your name isn't on the deed."
