Chapter 3: Healing in the Light

The next month was a blur of medical treatments, physical therapy, and deep, restorative rest. Dad flew me to his private estate in the French Riviera, far away from the media circus that had erupted in New York.
The headlines were brutal: “Rise and Instant Fall of Adrian Vale: CEO Arrested for Domestic Abuse and Billion-Dollar Fraud.” The leaked audio from the diamond pendant—carefully edited to protect my privacy but exposing Adrian and Vanessa's cruelty—had turned the entire world against them. They were the most hated people in the country.
I spent my days sitting by the infinity pool, watching the Mediterranean Sea. The physical scars on my back were healing, thanks to the best plastic surgeons my father could hire, but the emotional scars took longer.
"A penny for your thoughts?" a warm, gentle voice interrupted my thoughts.
I looked up to see Julian, my father’s chief legal counsel and a childhood friend I hadn't seen since before my marriage. He was holding a folder and a glass of fresh orange juice.
"Just thinking about how foolish I was," I sighed, accepting the juice. "I thought if I endured it, if I gathered enough evidence, I would feel a sense of victory. But looking back, I survived a nightmare."
"You aren't foolish, Elena. You are the bravest woman I know," Julian said earnestly, sitting on the lounger beside me. His eyes held a deep, steady warmth that made my heart flutter slightly—a feeling I hadn't felt in years. "You dismantled a corrupt financial syndicate from the inside while protecting your father's legacy. You aren't a victim; you are a victor."
He opened the folder, handing me the official documents. "Adrian’s legal team tried to fight for a piece of your assets under the marriage contract. I personally took care of it. The divorce is finalized. He gets absolutely nothing. In fact, due to the asset liquidation to pay back the stolen funds, he is currently fifty million dollars in debt to Vanguard Holdings—which means, he owes you."
I looked at the final divorce decree. Signed, sealed, and delivered. I was officially free.
"And Vanessa?" I asked.
"Her modeling and consulting contracts have all been cancelled. Her family disowned her to save their own skin. She’s currently awaiting trial in a maximum-security facility, alongside Adrian. They face up to twenty-five years each without parole," Julian explained, a small, satisfied smile on his face.

I breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a massive weight lift from my chest. "Thank you, Julian. For everything."
"Always, Elena," he said softly, his hand resting near mine, offering a silent promise of safety that I finally felt ready to accept.
