Chapter 4: The Public Reckoning

Six months later, the trial of the century commenced in New York City. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, high-society figures, and the public.

I walked into the courtroom wearing a stunning, tailored white power suit, my hair elegantly styled, walking alongside my father and Julian. I no longer wore the plain, muted clothes Adrian had forced me into. I was Elena Vance, proud and radiant.

Across the room, sitting at the defense table, were Adrian and Vanessa.

They looked unrecognisable. Adrian’s expensive suits were replaced by a standard orange prison jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his face gaunt, and his eyes lacked any of the arrogant spark they once held. Vanessa looked equally broken, her skin sallow, her glamorous demeanor completely stripped away.

When Adrian saw me walk in, his eyes widened. He tried to stand up, shouting, "Elena! Please! Tell them to drop the aggravated assault charges! I was out of my mind! I still love you!"

The judge slammed the gavel. "Silence from the defense! One more outburst and you will be removed!"

The prosecution played the audio recording from the night of the two hundred lashes. Hearing it again in the crowded courtroom sent shudders through the jury. Vanessa’s voice sneering, "Again, she rolled her eyes," and Adrian's cold, heavy breaths followed by the sound of the crop hitting skin.

Members of the jury gasped; some even wept.

When it was my turn to take the stand, I looked directly at Adrian. "I kept silent for a long time because I believed in the sanctity of marriage," I testified, my voice echoing with absolute clarity. "But Adrian Vale didn't want a wife; he wanted a puppet to abuse and a shield for his illegal crimes. He thought because my father was a 'retired accountant' that I had no protection. He learned the hard way that justice always finds a way."

The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.

"On all counts of corporate fraud, money laundering, grand larceny, and first-degree aggravated assault, we find the defendants, Adrian Vale and Vanessa Finch, guilty."

The judge sentenced them both to twenty-eight years in federal prison, with zero chance of early release. As the sentence was read, Vanessa burst into hysterical screams, pulling at her hair, while Adrian collapsed forward onto the table, sobbing uncontrollably.

I stood up, took my father's hand on one side and Julian's on the other, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back. Their prison had just begun, but mine was finally over.
