Chapter 3 - The Manhattan Standoff

While Teresa threw a hysterical fit in my driveway, screaming threats about family loyalty and calling my name through locked wrought-iron gates, David was living his own nightmare in midtown Manhattan.
In the VIP lounge of Zao Zero Diamond Boutique, the air was thick with tension. Chloe Vance—a twenty-four-year-old aspiring influencer and former receptionist at Vance Logistics—was staring at a platinum-set three-carat canary diamond ring with glistening eyes.
“David, babe, what’s taking so long?” Chloe whined, swirling her glass of complimentary champagne. “You said we were getting this before our flight to Paris!”
David was sweating through his bespoke Tom Ford suit. He stood near the glass display cases, furiously tapping his phone screen. Every single card in his leather wallet had been declined. His corporate account was locked. His personal account showed a available balance of $50.00.
“Sir,” the boutique manager said, his polite tone laced with unmistakable ice. “If you are unable to provide a valid form of payment, I’m afraid I must ask you to surrender the merchandise and vacate the private lounge. We have other VIP clients waiting.”
“Do you have any idea who I am?!” David hissed, his knuckles white as he gripped his phone. “I am David Hayes! COO of Vance Logistics!”
“I know who you are, Mr. Hayes,” the manager replied coldly, gesturing toward a security guard standing discreetly by the door. “And we have just received a formal alert from your primary financial institution flagging your profile for suspected unauthorized corporate expenditure. If you do not leave immediately, we will be forced to involve the NYPD.”
Chloe’s eyes widened in horror. She looked at David, then at the sparkling ring, then back at David’s panicked, sweat-stained face.
“David... what is he talking about?” Chloe demanded, her sweet demeanor instantly evaporating. “You told me you owned the company! You told me your wife was just a placeholder who lived off your salary!”
“Chloe, shut up for a second, I’m fixing it!” David barked, trying to call his mother. But Teresa’s calls were going straight to voicemail because she was currently standing in my driveway arguing with three police officers I had summoned to execute an emergency trespassing order.
Before David could make another move, his phone buzzed with an incoming email notification. It was an urgent summons from the Board of Directors of Vance Logistics, signed directly by the chief legal counsel.
