Chapter 5 - Teresa’s Humiliation

While David was being escorted out of the corporate headquarters by armed security, his mother Teresa was experiencing her own public downfall at the Suburban Country Club.

After being removed from my estate by the police, Teresa and Arthur had driven straight to the club in their leased Mercedes, convinced that their social standing would afford them refuge. Teresa had planned to gather her inner circle of wealthy neighborhood wives, spin a victim narrative about her 'unhinged' daughter-in-law, and organize a social boycott against me.

She sat at the center table on the sunny patio, her voice carrying across the lawn as she wept dramatic tears into a silk handkerchief.

“You wouldn't believe it, ladies!” Teresa wailed to a group of prominent local women. “Eleanor has completely lost her sanity! She threw us out on the street! After everything my family has done for her—taking her in, guiding her, letting her live in that big empty house!”

The women exchanged uncomfortable glances. Among them was Evelyn Montgomery, the club’s board president and my godmother.

“Teresa,” Evelyn said softly, setting her tea down with a quiet clink. “Is that why David was taking a late-night flight to Paris with a girl young enough to be his daughter?”

Teresa choked on her breath. “W-what?”

Evelyn pulled out her iPad and slid it across the white tablecloth. On the screen was a viral post from a local gossip blog: a high-resolution photo of David and Chloe at the Fifth Avenue diamond store, complete with a detailed caption detailing his credit card declines and his sudden termination from Vance Logistics.

“It seems the entire town already knows, Teresa,” Evelyn continued, her voice dripping with quiet disdain. “Eleanor didn't throw you out because she lost her mind. She threw you out because your son is a thief, a cheat, and a fraud who was living off her family's fortune while you treated her like unpaid help.”

Teresa’s jaw dropped. She looked around the table, but the sympathetic eyes she had expected were gone, replaced by looks of disgust and mockery.

At that moment, the club manager approached the table, accompanied by two valets holding Arthur’s golf clubs.

“Mrs. Hayes,” the manager said loudly enough for the entire patio to hear. “I’m afraid I must ask you and your husband to leave the premises. Mrs. Eleanor Hayes has revoked your secondary membership privileges, and your account has an unpaid balance of $12,000 for private catering services. Until that balance is settled in cash, your access to the club is suspended.”

Teresa felt every eye on the patio burning into her back. The high-society status she had spent fifteen years building—using my money and my family's name—vanished in a single afternoon.
