Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 1: THE MAN FROM THE SHADOWS

The dust from the shattered doorframe drifted slowly through the glare of the hallway lights.
Ryan stumbled backward into the kitchen island, his hands shaking, his chest heaving as he stared at the intruder. Vanessa was frozen, her mouth open in a soundless gasp, her knuckles white where she gripped my stolen phone.
I looked up from the cold floor, clutching my stomach with both arms.
The man standing in the doorway was broad-shouldered, six-foot-four, wearing a rain-drenched tactical jacket over dark clothing. His jawline was sharp, marked by a faded scar that ran from his left cheek down to his collar. Rainwater dripped from his dark hair onto the hardwood floor.
It was Gabriel Vance.
Gabriel had been my late husband’s older brother—a former military intelligence specialist who had vanished five years ago after his team’s convoy was ambushed in South America. His family had held a memorial service. His name was carved on a granite stone in Arlington. Everyone believed Gabriel was buried beneath six feet of earth.
Yet here he stood, alive, breathing, his cold gray eyes locked onto Vanessa Lopez.
"Gabriel?" Ryan choked out, his voice thin and hollow. "You're... you're dead. We went to your funeral."
Gabriel ignored Ryan entirely. He took three deliberate, heavy steps into the kitchen, his combat boots clicking against the tile. His gaze dropped to me—lying injured, bruised, and bleeding on the floor—and an expression of terrifying, lethal fury crossed his face.
"Get away from her," Gabriel said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards.
Vanessa took two steps backward, pulling my stolen phone against her chest as if it could shield her. "Gabriel... please. You don't understand—"
"I understand everything, Vanessa," Gabriel interrupted, stepping between Ryan and my crouched body. He didn't even draw a weapon; his sheer physical presence filled the room like an oncoming storm. "I've been tracking your paper trail from Zurich to Miami for eight months. You thought if you erased your identity records in South America, no one would trace the offshore transfer codes back to the Lopez syndicate."
My mind raced through the blinding pain in my shoulder and back. The Lopez syndicate?
Vanessa wasn't just Ryan’s office assistant. She was connected to an international financial syndicate.
"Ryan, he's lying!" Vanessa shrieked, her composure breaking completely. "He's unstable! He was discharged! Call the police!"
"Call them," Gabriel said softly, reaching down with one hand. His touch was surprisingly gentle as he slipped his arm under my shoulders, helping me lift my upper body off the floor. "Sophia, can you stand?"
"My... my shoulder," I gasped, tears cutting warm tracks through the cold sweat on my face. "My back... but the baby... she kicked. I think she's okay..."
"Hold onto me," Gabriel murmured, lifting me smoothly into his arms as if I weighed nothing. He set me down gently in a soft leather armchair in the adjoining living room, keeping his body positioned between me and the kitchen.
Ryan grabbed the wooden club from the floor, his face flushed red with a sudden, desperate rage. "Put my wife down! I don't care who you are! This is my house! Sophia cheated on me—"
Gabriel turned around so fast Ryan didn't even see the movement.
May you like
Before Ryan could lift the club, Gabriel’s right hand clamped around Ryan’s throat like a vice, slamming him backward against the granite counter. The wooden club clattered uselessly onto the floor.
"If you raise a hand against this woman or her child ever again," Gabriel growled, leaning in until his nose was inches from Ryan’s terrified face, "I won't just break your bones, Ryan. I will bury you in the same dark hole you tried to put me in five years ago."
