Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 6: THE BAIL HEARING

The Cook County Courthouse was surrounded by reporters and news vans at 9:00 a.m. the following morning.
The story of the pregnant Bennett heiress, the rogue husband, and the resurrected military hero had leaked to the press overnight.
I arrived in a sleek white tailored suit that gracefully accommodated my baby bump, walking side-by-side with Matthew and Lucas. Ethan walked ahead with our family attorney, Victoria Sterling.
Gabriel walked directly behind me, wearing his crisp, dark military service dress uniform, decorated with medals of honor that caught the light of the flashbulbs.
Inside Courtroom 402, Ryan sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, his jaw heavily bandaged and wired shut. His parents sat behind him, looking pale and terrified.
Beside Ryan sat Vanessa Lopez, also in handcuffs, represented by a court-appointed public defender after her syndicate contact vanished overnight.
When our group entered, the entire courtroom went silent.
Ryan looked up, his eyes widening as he saw me walking steadily toward the prosecution table, holding my head high. When his eyes drifted to Gabriel’s uniform and medals, all the remaining arrogance drained from his face.
The judge, Honorable Judge Evelyn Harris, took her bench and slammed her gavel.
"We are here for the emergency bail and custody petition in the matter of State of Illinois v. Ryan Miller and Vanessa Lopez," Judge Harris announced, scanning the documents before her.
Ryan’s lead defense attorney, a high-priced lawyer named Marcus Vance (no relation to Gabriel), stood up smoothly.
"Your Honor," Marcus began, his voice dripping with practiced charm. "My client, Mr. Miller, was the victim of a catastrophic psychological setup orchestrated by Ms. Lopez. He was fed false reports of spousal infidelity and slipped synthetic substances. The incident at the house was a tragic misunderstanding. Furthermore, the injuries suffered by Mrs. Bennett were the direct result of the unannounced, violent entry by Mr. Gabriel Vance—"
"Lie," a deep voice cut through the courtroom.
Gabriel stood up from the front row of spectator seating.
"Mr. Vance, sit down," Judge Harris warned, though her eyes were filled with sharp curiosity. "You will have your turn to speak."
"Your Honor," Victoria Sterling stood up for our side. "We request permission to present new physical evidence recovered by Federal Authorities two hours ago."
Victoria handed a USB drive to the court bailiff.
"What is this?" Judge Harris asked, plugging the drive into her bench computer.
"When Ms. Lopez wiped the house security servers," Victoria explained, "she didn't realize the system was mirrored onto an encrypted cloud server managed by Ethan Bennett’s technology firm. We have retrieved the unedited, full 4K video recording from the kitchen."
Ryan’s lawyer went rigid. "Your Honor, this is unauthenticated—"
"Overruled," Judge Harris snapped, pressing play on her screen.
The courtroom monitors lit up.
The video played clearly, showing Ryan raising the thick wooden club over my pregnant stomach, hearing my desperate pleas for our baby's life, and striking me twice across the shoulder and lower back. It showed Vanessa laughing and taking my phone.
And then, it showed the front door exploding inward as Gabriel smashed through to save my life.
The horrifying audio of Ryan’s voice filled the courtroom: “You lying traitor!” followed by the sharp, terrible sound of the club striking my body and my screams.
In the spectator gallery, Ryan’s mother buried her face in her hands, weeping with shame.
Judge Harris closed her eyes for three seconds, taking a deep, shuddering breath. When she opened them, her eyes were burning with icy fury.
"Bail is denied," Judge Harris declared, her gavel crashing down like thunder. "For both defendants. Mr. Miller, Ms. Lopez, you will remain in maximum security custody until your trial."
May you like
She looked directly at Ryan.
"Furthermore, an immediate, permanent protection order is issued barring Ryan Miller from ever coming within five thousand feet of Sophia Bennett or her child. Custody rights are permanently severed."
