Chapter 2 - The Scent of Perfume and Lies

By 8:00 p.m., the hospital had settled into a quiet, eerie hush. Claire finally agreed to step down to the cafeteria to get a cup of tea. She needed a moment to breathe air that didn't taste of hospital air conditioning.
As she walked down the ground-floor corridor near the main entrance, she saw them.
Daniel was standing near the vending machines. Beside him was Vanessa Reed.
Vanessa was a striking woman, the kind who wore designer athleisure wear to a hospital and still managed to look perfectly put together. She was holding a paper cup, her hand resting on Daniel's arm, whispering in his ear. Daniel looked broken, his head in his hands, but he wasn't pulling away from her touch.
"Daniel, you have to calm down," Vanessa was saying, her voice carrying in the quiet hallway. "Lily is safe at home with my mother. You did the right thing. Lily’s asthma is chronic. You didn't know Noah’s fever would get that bad. It’s an accident."
"An accident?" Claire’s voice cut through the air like a guillotine.
Both of them jumped. Daniel spun around, his face flushing with a mix of guilt and terror. Vanessa immediately took a step back, dropping her hand from his arm, her eyes darting toward the exit.
"Claire," Daniel stammered, taking a step forward. "Claire, thank God. How is he? Is he awake? I've been trying to get back up, but the staff—"
"Get away from me," Claire said. She didn't yell. Her quiet fury was far more terrifying. She looked at Vanessa. "And you. You brought your child to an emergency room, knowing my husband would abuse his medical insurance and his position to put your daughter ahead of my dying son."
"Claire, please, I didn't know Noah was that sick!" Vanessa protested, her hands raised in a defensive gesture. "Daniel called me and said he was bringing Lily in. I didn't know about Noah until I got here."
"You lied," Claire said, stepping closer to Daniel. "You told the nurse Lily arrived first. You looked me in the eyes while my son was turning blue, and you lied for her."
"I was panicked!" Daniel pleaded, tears finally streaming down his face. "Lily was wheezing. I've seen Noah bounce back from a million fevers, Claire! I didn't think—I didn't think it was this bad! I swear to God, if I could take it back, I would."
"But you can't," Claire said. "And you won't. I want you to listen to me very carefully, Daniel. Do not come back to this hospital. If I see your face, or her face, within a mile of my son, I will file for an emergency restraining order. I will call the police. I will show the hospital administration the security footage of what you did at the triage desk."
"Claire, you can't do this, I'm his father!" Daniel yelled, his panic turning into anger. "You can't lock me out of my own son's life!"
"You locked yourself out the moment you chose her child over ours," Claire said. She turned her back on them, walking back toward the elevators.
Behind her, she heard Daniel trying to follow, but the security guard from the lobby, alerted by the raised voices, stepped in front of him.

"Sir, you need to leave," the guard’s voice was firm.
As the elevator doors closed, Claire saw Vanessa pulling at Daniel's sleeve, trying to drag him toward the exit. The battle had officially begun, and Claire knew she was completely alone.
