Chapter 5 - Public Ruin

The offices of Whitmore & Associates were located in a prestigious high-rise in downtown Phoenix. Daniel sat at his glass desk, staring at a set of blueprints, but he couldn't focus. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Noah's blue lips. He saw Claire's empty, dead eyes.

His phone rang. It was Vanessa.

"Daniel, the bank just called," she said, her voice frantic. "The joint account we set up for the new house... it's frozen. I couldn't pay the contractor."

"What?" Daniel stood up. "That's impossible. That account is under a business name."

"They had a court order, Daniel! What is going on?"

Before he could answer, his office door flew open. Two men in dark suits walked in, followed by the firm’s managing partner, Arthur Pendelton.

"Daniel Whitmore?" one of the men asked.

"Yes?"

The man dropped a thick stack of legal documents onto his desk. "You've been served. Emergency petition for sole custody, dissolution of marriage, and an injunction freezing all personal and corporate assets linked to your name."

Arthur Pendelton looked at Daniel with a mixture of disgust and pity. "Daniel, we need to talk in the boardroom. Now."

Ten minutes later, Daniel was sitting in a room with the firm’s senior partners. On the large screen on the wall, Arthur had pulled up a local news website.

“LOCAL ARCHITECT ACCUSED OF ABANDONING SEIZING SON IN ER TO BENEFIT MISTRESS’S CHILD.”

The article had already been shared thousands of times. It contained leaked details from the hospital incident report—including the quote from the triage nurse about Daniel lying about who arrived first.

"This is a disaster," Arthur said. "Our clients are already calling. The City Council is threatening to pull our contract for the new library project if your name is on it. We are a family-oriented firm, Daniel. What you did... it’s monstrous."

"It was a misunderstanding!" Daniel yelled, his chest heaving. "My daughter—"

"She isn't your daughter!" Arthur snapped. "She's your mistress’s child! You let your own son suffer brain damage for a woman you've been sleeping with behind your wife's back. We are buying out your partnership shares. At a heavily discounted rate, as per our morality clause. You are fired, Daniel. Pack your things and leave the building by the back elevator."

Daniel sat frozen. In less than twenty-four hours, his career, his reputation, and his fortune had vanished.

As he walked out of the building carrying a cardboard box of his personal belongings, his phone buzzed again. It was Vanessa.

"Daniel, the police are at my house," she sobbed. "They're asking questions about insurance fraud. They say you used your wife’s insurance for Lily without authorization. Daniel, you have to help me!"

Daniel stared at the phone. For the first time, the weight of his choices began to crush him. He had sacrificed everything for this woman, and now, the walls were closing in on both of them.
