Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Past

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when Claire received a letter with a prison stamp on the envelope.

She sat at her kitchen table, looking at the return address: Arizona State Prison Complex - Florence.

She opened it. Inside was a single sheet of lined paper, written in Daniel’s messy handwriting.

Claire,

I don't expect you to reply to this. I know I have no right to write to you. But I am coming up for my first parole hearing in three months, and the chaplain here told me that true repentance means facing the damage I’ve done.

I am so sorry, Claire. I ruined everything. I ruined my own life, but worse, I almost ended our son's. I have nightmares every night about that ER lobby. I see myself turning my back on you. I don't know who that man was. I was selfish, weak, and stupid.

Vanessa left the state. She doesn't write. She doesn't visit. I have nothing left. No money, no career, no friends, and no family. I deserve all of it. I just want to know... does Noah hate me? Does he know what I did?

I don't ask for forgiveness. I just ask for mercy. If you could find it in your heart to write back, just one line to tell me he is okay, it would be the only light in this dark place.

Daniel.

Claire read the letter twice. Her hands did not shake. Her heart did not race.

She went to her desk, took out a sheet of paper, and wrote a single sentence.

Daniel,

Noah is happy, healthy, and loved. He does not hate you because he does not remember you. We have built a beautiful life, and you are not a part of it. Do not write to us again.

May you like

Claire.

She folded the paper, put it in an envelope, and mailed it. It was the final closure she didn't even know she needed. She felt no malice toward him, only the finality of a chapter that was permanently closed.
