Chapter 4 - The Red Carpet at the Grand Aster

The Grand Aster Hotel in downtown Miami was an island of blinding light, wealth, and absolute power.

Flashing press cameras lined the long red carpet leading from the marble driveway to the golden archways of the main ballroom. Hundreds of the nation’s most prominent figures—oil tycoons, European aristocrats, tech founders, and senior political leaders—milled about under the massive crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne that cost five thousand dollars a bottle.

Near the center of the entrance hall, looking frayed, frantic, and entirely out of place, stood David Thorne and Chloe Winters.

David’s tuxedo was slightly wrinkled from his frantic drive in his older, personal sedan—the only vehicle the repossession officers hadn't managed to lock out before he fled the estate. Chloe’s cheek was covered in heavy foundation to hide the deep red mark left by Catherine's hand, her silver dress looking slightly crumpled.

Standing beside them was Martha Thorne, her face pale, her hands trembling as she clutched her imitation pearl clutch—her genuine emeralds had been locked in a safe deposit box that the bank had frozen two hours earlier.

"David, this is an absolute humiliation!" Martha hissed under her breath, looking nervously at the passing socialites who were ignoring them. "We were forced to drive here in that dreadful ten-year-old car! Where is our table assignment? Why aren't we being escorted to the VIP dais?!"

"Quiet, Mother!" David snapped, sweating profusely into his wingtip collar. "I am trying to find Arthur Vance! Once I explain to Vance that Catherine has gone insane and stolen corporate records, he will release the banking hold!"

"Look!" Chloe whispered, pointing toward the main entrance. "There’s Julian! Your CFO!"

Julian Croft rushed through the crowd, his tie undone, holding an iPad with a shattered screen. His face was gray.

"David..." Julian panted, grabbing David’s forearm with a wet, trembling hand. "It’s over. It’s all over."

David shook him off furiously. "Stop panicking, Julian! Did you talk to the board?"

"The board just held an emergency vote over Zoom!" Julian choked out, his eyes wide with horror. "They removed you as CEO thirty minutes ago! They invoked the key-man default clause because Sterling Capital called in the loans! They sold the primary voting shares to an anonymous holding group for one dollar to clear the liability!"

"One dollar?!" David roared, several surrounding guests turning to stare at him in disgust. "They can't sell my company for a dollar!"

"They did!" Julian cried. "And the new owner just filed a restructuring order! The Thorne name is being removed from the building tomorrow morning! You are completely wiped out, David! You have zero equity! You have negative forty million dollars in personal liabilities!"

Chloe let out a faint, terrified squeak, stepping back from David as if he had caught a contagious plague. "Negative... forty million?"

"David..." Martha whimpered, grabbing her heart. "My allowance... my house in Naples..."

"Shut up! All of you, shut up!" David’s eyes were bloodshot, his mind spinning into complete madness. "The Sterling family owns Sterling Capital! The Chairwoman of the Sterling Foundation is attending tonight! I will go directly to her! I’ll explain that Thorne Group is a viable enterprise being sabotaged by an rogue executor!"

At that exact moment, the heavy brass doors of the Grand Aster’s primary private entrance swung open.

The main ballroom fell into an immediate, reverent hush.

The press lights outside doubled in intensity, casting long, brilliant white beams through the soaring glass windows of the foyer. The hotel’s general manager, accompanied by eight security directors and the Governor of the state, walked toward the entrance with their heads bowed in deep respect.

"She’s here," someone in the crowd whispered.

"The Chairwoman... she hasn't appeared in public in seven years..." another high-society matriarch murmured.

David pushed his way through the crowd, dragged by a desperate, delusional hope that this was his moment of salvation. Chloe and Martha stumbled behind him, desperate to cling to whatever life they were about to lose.

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft, melodic chime.

Four tall men in bespoke charcoal suits stepped out first, clearing a wide, perimeter line around the golden carpet.

Then she emerged.

A collective gasp echoed across the vast grand hall.

The woman was a vision of breathtaking, unyielding power. She wore a floor-length gown of midnight-black velvet, structured with silver metallic embroidery along the high collar. Around her neck sat the legendary Sterling Solitaire—a sixty-carat flawless white diamond that had not been seen in public since the late 1990s. Her hair was styled in an intricate, dark crown, and her posture was that of an empress taking possession of her court.

Beside her walked Arthur Vance, holding a gold-trimmed leather ledger.

David stopped dead in his tracks. His jaw dropped. The breath was knocked entirely out of his lungs.

The champagne glass in Martha’s hand slipped through her fingers, crashing onto the marble floor, shattering into a hundred glittering pieces.

"No..." David whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched squeak. "No... no, no, no..."

Chloe stared at the woman in black velvet, her mouth hanging open, her face draining of every drop of color. "That... that's... the housewife?"

Catherine Sterling walked down the golden runner, her hazel eyes cold, serene, and absolutely lethal.

She didn't look left. She didn't look right. The Governor bowed deeply as she approached, offering his hand, which she acknowledged with a simple, regal nod.

Then, her gaze slowly turned.

Her eyes settled directly on David Thorne, standing ten feet away in his wrinkled tuxedo, surrounded by the ruins of his family.
