Chapter 9 - The Archival File

In the deep subterranean vault of the Sterling Family Office in Zurich, Arthur Vance stood before an open steel cabinet.
Inside lay thousands of leather-bound files containing the long, complex history of the Sterling family's global holdings—investments in shipping, banking, tech, and international real estate spanning over a century.
Arthur pulled a thin, black folder labeled THORNE GROUP / ATTACHMENT EXHIBITS.
Inside were the forensic accounting reports, the court filings, the foreclosure notices, and a single, high-resolution photograph taken on the night of the Grand Aster Gala.
The photograph showed David Thorne on his knees on the gold runner, his face contorted in frantic, pathetic weeping, looking up at Catherine Sterling as she pulled her black velvet gown away from his reach.
Arthur looked at the photograph for a long moment. A small, cold smile touched the corner of his lips.
He pulled a heavy red stamp from his desk, inked it carefully, and pressed it across the center of the file with a firm, decisive thud.

Arthur closed the black folder, placed it back into the steel cabinet, and turned the heavy brass key in the lock.

He walked out of the vault, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the stone floor, stepping into the bright, sunlit glass atrium where the global operators of Sterling Financial were quietly conducting the business of the world.
The Thorne error had been erased. The account was balanced.
