Chapter 5 - The Kneeling at Table One

The silence in the grand ballroom was so heavy it felt like a physical weight pressing down on the hundreds of elite guests.
Catherine stopped at the foot of the central dais—Table One, the raised platform reserved exclusively for the owner of the Sterling Foundation.
Arthur Vance stepped forward, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room through the house audio system.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his tone cold and resonant. "Allow me to introduce the owner and global Chairwoman of Sterling Financial Group... Madam Catherine Vance Sterling."
A low, thunderous wave of whispers swept through the room.
"Sterling? She's Alexander Sterling's daughter?!" "The one who disappeared seven years ago?!" "My God... David Thorne's wife was a Sterling?!"
David felt as though the floor beneath his feet had suddenly dissolved into an endless void. Every piece of his life—every interaction, every moment he had spent mocking her background, every time his mother had called her a penniless orphan, every time he had restricted her access to money—flashed through his mind like a grotesque nightmare.
He hadn't rescued her from a shabby apartment.
She had built his entire world out of pity.
Driven by a sudden, frantic instinct for survival, David pushed past the security boundary, stumbling onto the golden runner.
"Catherine!" he sobbed out, throwing himself forward. "Catherine! Please!"
Two Sterling security guards instantly seized him by his shoulders, forcing him to his knees three feet from the hem of her black velvet gown.
"David Thorne," Arthur Vance said, stepping between David and Catherine. "You are approaching the Chairwoman without authorization."
"Catherine, look at me!" David begged, tears streaming down his face, ruining his expensive posture. "I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know who you were! I was stupid! I was influenced by my mother... by Chloe! They lied to me about everything!"
Behind him, Chloe gasped in horror. "David! How dare you?!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" David screamed over his shoulder, his voice hysterical. "You struck her daughter! You brought this on us!" He turned back to Catherine, reaching out his handcuffed hands. "Catherine, please... think of Lily! We are a family! I am her father! You can't destroy her father's legacy!"
Catherine slowly stepped forward until she stood directly over him.
She looked down at the man who had sat across from her at the dinner table for six years—the man who had watched his mistress knock his daughter's teeth out and adjusted his cufflinks.
"A father?" Catherine asked softly. Her voice wasn't loud, but in the dead silence of the ballroom, every person heard every syllable. "A father protects his child, David. A father doesn't stand by while a stranger strikes a five-year-old girl over a smear of chocolate on a cheap dress."
"I was wrong!" David wept, pressing his forehead against the cold marble floor at her feet. "I will kneel! You told me to kneel... I'm kneeling! I'll kneel for the rest of my life! Just give me back my company! Don't ruin me!"
Martha Thorne stumbled forward, her hands shaking, her face twisted in a mixture of horror and desperate begging. "Catherine... my dear... I was hard on you, yes, but I was only trying to teach you how to be a proper wife for our family! We are family, Catherine! You can't let us be thrown into the street!"
Catherine looked at Martha with a expression of pure, unadulterated pity.
"You called my daughter useless, Martha," Catherine said flatly. "You said she had no discipline while she was bleeding on your floor. You spent six years making sure I felt like a servant in your home."
She turned her eyes to Chloe, who was shrinking back into the crowd, trying to melt into the shadows.
"And you, Chloe," Catherine continued, her voice dropping into an icy register. "You thought you were replacing me. You thought you were stepping into a life of luxury built by David."
Catherine raised her hand slightly.
Arthur Vance pulled a black leather binder from his suit jacket and opened it.
"By order of the Sterling Legal Directorate," Arthur read aloud, "all personal assets belonging to David Thorne, Martha Thorne, and Chloe Winters are under immediate asset attachment for civil damages, corporate fraud, and child endangerment. The Palm Beach estate has been repossessed. The family accounts are zeroed. Furthermore, criminal warrants for physical assault against a minor have been issued for Chloe Winters."
Two uniformed city police officers stepped out from the main foyer, moving directly toward Chloe.
"No! Get away from me!" Chloe screamed, kicking and flailing as the officers grabbed her wrists, snapping silver handcuffs over her manicured hands. "David! Do something! You promised me you'd protect me!"
David didn't even look at her. He remained on his knees, weeping hysterically against Catherine's shoes. "Catherine... please... one chance... just one chance..."
Catherine stepped back, pulling the train of her velvet gown away from his grasp.

"You had six years of chances, David," she whispered. "And you wasted every single one of them."
She turned her back on him, stepping up onto the central dais to take her place at the head of the global financial world.
