Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Linoleum

BABY
The word hung in the air like an electric charge, sharp and terrifying. The moment Wyatt called it an assault, the brittle atmosphere inside the supermarket shattered.
Pain rippled across my lower abdomen, a sharp, twisting contraction that made my vision blur at the edges. I pressed both hands against my belly, gasping for air that felt too thin to breathe. Warmth bloomed against the fabric of my dress, and when I pulled my fingers away, they were slick with blood.
"She’s bleeding!" the woman at the next register screamed, dropping her purse. "Oh God, somebody help her!"
The sight of the blood snapped the surrounding customers out of their shock. Two women rushed to my side, kneeling in the dirt and dropped receipts on the floor. One of them pulled off her cardigan, hastily folding it to support my head, while the other took my trembling hand in hers.
"Stay still, honey," the woman whispered, her voice trembling with genuine warmth. "Don't move. The ambulance is coming."
Across the checkout lane, David was thrashing against Wyatt’s grip. The polished regional director persona had completely evaporated, revealing the unhinged, narcissistic predator beneath.
"Let go of me, you redneck piece of trash!" David shrieked, his face turning a blotchy, venomous purple. "Do you know who I am?! I’m the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Apex Logistics! I will ruin you! I will buy this pathetic store and fire you by morning!"
Wyatt didn't flinch. His grip on David’s collar remained ironclad, his massive frame pinning David against the customer service counter. "You can buy whatever you want after the sheriff puts the cuffs on you, big man. But right now, you aren't going anywhere."
Suddenly, a middle-aged man wearing a dark trench coat stepped out from the pharmacy section at the back of the store. He carried a leather briefcase and moved with an air of quiet, lethal authority. He didn't look like a shopper; he looked like a wolf who had been patiently tracking its prey.
The man walked straight up to David, pulled a leather badge holder from his coat pocket, and flipped it open.
"David Vance," the man said in a flat, clinical tone. "I’m Special Agent Marcus Brody with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Financial Crimes Division."
David stopped squirming. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse in a pristine polo shirt. "F... FBI? What are you talking about? This is a domestic misunderstanding!"
"It was a domestic assault," Agent Brody corrected coldly. "And unfortunately for you, Mr. Vance, we’ve been monitoring your local movements for three weeks. We were waiting to serve the federal indictment for wire fraud and embezzlement at your office tomorrow morning. But seeing as you just assaulted your heavily pregnant wife on high-definition security cameras in front of fourteen witnesses, we’re moving the timeline up."
The checkout area went dead silent. The cashier holding the store phone stopped dialing, her mouth hanging open.
I looked up from the floor, my eyes wide despite the burning pain in my side. Embezzlement? Federal indictment?
"You're crazy," David stammered, his polished confidence crumbling into pathetic desperation. "I haven't done anything wrong! My family owns Vance Enterprises!"
"Your family's firm has been laundering offshore funds for three shell companies in Panama," Agent Brody said, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his coat. "And according to the audit logs we seized from your private server an hour ago, you’ve been transferring those funds into a personal account under your wife’s maiden name—setting her up to take the fall when the house of cards collapsed."
A fresh wave of shock washed over me, far colder than the pain in my stomach. He hadn't just abused me. He hadn't just begrudged a fourteen-dollar baby blanket.
David had been framing me for federal crimes so he could walk away rich while I spent decades in a federal prison.
Before I could process the monstrous scale of his betrayal, a violent contraction slammed through my body, forcing a ragged scream from my throat.
"The baby!" I gasped, clutching my stomach as tears spilled over my cheeks. "Wyatt... please... the baby!"
Wyatt turned his head, his eyes softening instantly with deep, protective empathy. "Hold on, ma'am. I hear the sirens now."
Outside, the wail of police cruisers and an ambulance echoed through the parking lot. Within seconds, paramedics burst through the automatic glass doors carrying a stretcher and emergency trauma kits.
As the paramedics lifted me onto the gurney, David was forced onto his knees by Agent Brody and two arriving sheriff's deputies. The steel cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
David looked at me as they rolled my stretcher past him. There was no remorse in his eyes—only pure, terrifying hatred.
"You won't get a cent, Elena!" David spat, his voice echoing off the supermarket ceiling as he was dragged toward the exit. "My mother will make sure you starve! You hear me?! You’ll rot!"

"Shut your mouth, Vance," Agent Brody growled, shoving him out into the night.
I closed my eyes as oxygen was placed over my face, praying with every remaining shred of my soul that my unborn child would survive the night.
