Chapter 4 - The Federal Trap

The following morning, the war officially began.

Clara Mercer arrived at my hospital room accompanied by Special Agent Brody. They set up a mobile workstation on my tray table, pulling out printouts of bank transfers, security footage stills, and corporate registry records.

"Victoria Vance made a critical error yesterday," Agent Brody explained, clicking his pen. "By entering your room and delivering that ultimatum, she committed federal witness tampering and extortion."

"Did you record it?" Clara asked me.

I pulled my cell phone from beneath my pillow. "I hit record on my voice memo app the second she walked into the room."

Agent Brody took the phone, plugging it into his laptop to transfer the audio file. As Victoria’s icy voice played through the speakers—explicitly offering to trade freedom from fraud charges in exchange for baby custody—Agent Brody let out a low, satisfied whistle.

"That's a slam dunk," Brody said, grinning. "We just added federal extortion to the indictment list."

"What about the financial accounts under my name?" I asked anxiously. "How do we prove David forged my signature?"

Clara pulled out a thick document bound with blue tape. "We ran a forensic handwriting analysis on the three offshore account opening documents in Panama. The signatures were created using a digital trace of your signature pulled from your marriage certificate from three years ago. The metadata on David’s personal computer proves he created the digital stamp file on his office desktop."

I felt a massive weight lift off my chest. "So the FBI knows I didn't steal the money?"

"The FBI knows you were a victim from day one," Agent Brody confirmed. "In fact, the United States Attorney’s Office has officially granted you full immunity as a cooperating witness. You are completely cleared of all financial liability."

Tears of pure relief flooded my eyes. For months, David had manipulated me into believing I was stupid, incompetent, and dependent on his financial protection. In reality, he was the fraud, and I was the key to his undoing.

"Now," Clara said, leaning forward with a sharp, professional smile. "It’s time to deal with the custody battle."

"Victoria Vance has filed an emergency motion with the Family Court," Clara continued, "claiming that because David is in federal custody and you are currently hospitalized, the baby should be placed in her temporary care upon discharge from the NICU."

"She’s not touching my daughter," I said, my jaw set like iron.

"She won't," Clara assured me. "We’ve filed a counter-motion with Judge Katherine Hayes—the most tough-as-nails family court judge in the county. We’ve attached the supermarket security footage of David’s assault, the audio recording of Victoria’s extortion attempt, and your official federal clearance."

"When is the hearing?"

"Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM," Clara said. "And Agent Brody has arranged for a federal transport so you can attend in person."

That evening, after Clara and Brody left, Wyatt came back to the room. He carried a small wooden box he had crafted in his garage shop during his break.

He set it gently on my bedside table. "I built this for Lily's memory items. Her first hospital bracelet, her baby clothes... things like that."

I ran my fingers over the polished, smooth cherry wood. "Wyatt... why are you doing all of this for me? You barely knew me before that night in the store."

Wyatt sat down in the vinyl armchair beside my bed, looking down at his large, calloused hands.

"Three years ago, Elena," Wyatt spoke softly, his voice full of quiet pain, "my younger sister was in an abusive marriage. She kept it hidden from us. She was too proud, too scared to ask for help. One night... her husband pushed her down the stairs. She survived, but she lost her baby."

He looked up at me, his blue eyes gleaming with emotion. "I couldn't protect my sister that night, Elena. When I saw that scumbag drive you into the checkout counter... I swore on my life I wasn't going to let another innocent woman get broken on my watch."

I reached out, placing my hand over his large, rough knuckles. "You saved us, Wyatt. Both of us."

"And we're going to finish this tomorrow," Wyatt promised softly. "Together."
