Chapter 1 - The Breakout

The silence in the grand ballroom was suffocating, heavy with the stench of cheap vanilla icing and shattered illusions. Ethan’s grip on Emma’s wrist tightened, his knuckles white, his eyes flashing with a dangerous fury that had previously been hidden beneath magnetic charm. He leaned down, his voice a lethal whisper in her ear. "You walk out that door, Emma, and I will destroy everything you care about. Your father’s firm. Your reputation. Everything."

Emma looked down at his hand pinioned against her skin. For three years, she had mistaken his possessiveness for passion, his jealousy for devotion. But as the cold icing slid down her throat and soaked through her silk gown, the veil lifted completely.

"Let go of my daughter."

The voice boomed across the marble floor. Emma’s father, Arthur, stepped forward, his face flushed with righteous outrage. Beside him, Emma’s maid of honor, Sarah, snapped out of her trance, quickly positioning herself between Ethan and Emma.

"Touch her again, Ethan, and you won’t leave this room on your own two feet," Arthur warned, his voice trembling with a mixture of heartbreak and iron resolve.

Ethan let out a harsh, bitter laugh, releasing her wrist with a mocking flick. "You’re all insane! It was a prank! A harmless wedding tradition!" He looked around the crowd of two hundred and fifty guests, looking for allies, but met only sea of disgusted faces and turned heads. Even his own corporate investors were backing away toward the velvet curtains.

Emma didn't say another word. She turned her back on him, her head held high despite the cake drying on her cheek and the mascara staining her skin. She walked past the towering crystal chandeliers, past the five-tier wedding cake lying in ruin on the tablecloth, and out through the golden double doors of the estate.

The night air was cool against her feverish skin. Rain had begun to fall, washing away the sugar and cream from her face as she reached her father’s car. Sarah rushed behind her, wrapping a heavy wool trench coat over her ruined bridal gown.

"Where do we go?" Sarah asked, her hands shaking as she unlocked the passenger door.

Emma looked back one last time at the glowing windows of the mansion, where Ethan’s silhouette stood framed against the light, phone already pressed to his ear.

"We go to your apartment," Emma said, her voice dropping all hesitation. "And we change the locks on my life."
