Chapter 6 - The VIP Suite

The 12th floor of the First National Private Wealth Tower in downtown Denver was the epitome of corporate luxury. Polished white marble floors, floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the Rocky Mountains, and quiet, suit-wearing wealth managers moving discreetly through executive suites.

At 8:45 a.m., I walked out of the elevator, flanked by Evelyn Vance on my left and Prosecutor David Sterling on my right. Two plainclothes federal agents walked silently five paces behind us.

Through the glass wall of Private Conference Room 12B, I could see them.

Adrian and Julian were sitting side by side at a massive mahogany conference table. A high-end laptop sat open between them, connected to a secure bank transaction terminal. Julian was holding a cup of espresso, laughing as Adrian pointed enthusiastically at the signed document sitting beside the keyboard.

They looked like two victory-drunk corporate raiders preparing to split their plunder.

"Account verification is complete," Prosecutor Sterling murmured, looking at his encrypted tablet. "Julian just initiated the wire transfer protocol. The moment he hits 'Confirm,' the bank fraud charge is legally sealed."

Inside the room, Julian smiled, leaning over the keyboard. He tapped the blue Confirm Transfer key on the screen.

On Sterling’s tablet, a bright red notification flashed: WIRE TRANSFER ATTEMPTED - $2,000,000.00 - FRAUD ALERT TRIGGERED - ACCOUNT FROZEN.

"That’s it," Sterling nodded to the federal agents. "Go."

I stepped forward, placing my hand on the silver door handle of Conference Room 12B, and pushed it open.

The soft click of the door opening made Adrian look up.

When he saw me standing in the doorway, wearing my trench coat, flanked by Evelyn Vance and three men in sharp charcoal suits, his dimpled smile instantly brightened with fake charm.

"El?" Adrian asked, standing up from his chair, looking genuinely confused. "Sweetheart, what are you doing here? I told you I had high-level corporate filings to handle this morning."

Julian Vance slowly closed the laptop lid halfway, his eyes narrowing as he evaluated the strangers standing behind me. "Adrian... who are these people?"

I didn't answer right away. I strolled calmly into the room, my heels clicking sharply against the hard flooring. I walked right up to the mahogany table, stopping directly opposite Adrian and Julian.

"I came to see the final corporate restructuring, Adrian," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and completely lacking any emotion. "I wanted to make sure my signature was processed properly."

Adrian forced a awkward chuckle, stepping around the table toward me. "Darling, this is private client business. You really shouldn't be here right now. Let’s go outside in the hallway and—"

"Don't touch me, Adrian," I said coldly, stepping back.

Adrian froze, his hand hanging in mid-air. The fake warmth on his face began to fracture, revealing a sudden, sharp prickle of irritation. "Eleanor, don't be ridiculous. What is wrong with you?"

"Nothing is wrong with me, Adrian," I smiled softly, looking past him to Julian Vance. "Good morning, Julian. How was your flight back from Gate 42 on Friday?"
