Chapter 7 - The Mask Shatters

The room fell into a suffocating, absolute silence.

Julian Vance’s face drained of every drop of color. The espresso cup in his hand trembled so violently that brown liquid sloshed over the rim, staining the white tablecloth.

"What... what did you just say?" Julian choked out.

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He looked from me to Julian, and then back to me, his brow furrowing in deep, panicked confusion. "Gate 42? What the hell are you talking about, Eleanor?"

"Denver International Airport," I said clearly, taking my phone out of my handbag and placing it gently in the center of the mahogany table. I tapped the screen.

The high-definition video began to play clearly through the phone’s speakers:

“Everything is already arranged,” Adrian’s recorded voice echoed sharply through the quiet room. “She has no idea she’s about to lose everything.”

“She really won’t know what happened until it’s too late,” Julian’s voice responded smoothly on the video, followed by the clear, undeniable image of Adrian leaning forward and kissing Julian passionately on the mouth.

Adrian stared at the glowing phone screen as if a venomous snake had just crawled out of it. His chest began to heave violently beneath his tailored vest.

"El..." Adrian stammered, his confident voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak. "El, baby... listen to me! That’s... that’s not what it looks like! I can explain—"

"You don't have to explain anything, Adrian," I interrupted smoothly. "I recorded that video three days ago. Which means I’ve known about your affair, your illegal shell companies, and your little plan to steal my father’s house for seventy-two hours."

Julian stood up so fast his heavy leather chair slammed into the glass wall behind him. "You set us up!" Julian snarled, his eyes wide with blind, desperate panic. He grabbed the open laptop, attempting to slam it shut and yank the hard drive out.

"Don't touch that computer, Mr. Vance!" Prosecutor Sterling barked, stepping into the room and flashing his official federal badge. "United States Department of Justice! Hands where we can see them! Right now!"

Julian froze, his hands hovering over the keyboard, his face twisted in absolute terror.

Adrian stumbled back, clutching the edge of the conference table to keep his knees from buckling. He looked at Prosecutor Sterling, then at the two heavy-set federal agents stepping into the room with handcuffs drawn, and finally at Evelyn Vance.

"Evelyn..." Adrian gasped, his arrogant demeanor completely collapsing into pathetic desperation. "Evelyn, please! This is a marital misunderstanding! Eleanor and I just need to talk privately! We can work this out!"

"There is nothing to work out, Adrian," Evelyn said coldly, her sharp blue eyes looking down at him with utter disdain. "The Federal Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the United States Attorney’s Office, has officially executed an emergency seizure warrant on all assets belonging to Vance Global Logistics, Cole Consulting, and your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman."

"No..." Adrian whispered, clutching his hair with both hands. "No, no, no! That paper she signed—"

"That paper she signed," Prosecutor Sterling interrupted firmly, "was a digitally tracked evidentiary document. The moment your partner tapped 'Confirm' on that terminal three minutes ago, you both committed grand bank fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit criminal asset stripping across state lines."

One of the federal agents stepped behind Julian Vance, roughly twisting his arms behind his back and snapping cold iron handcuffs around his wrists.

"Julian!" Adrian screamed, backing away into the corner of the glass wall like a trapped animal. "Julian, say something! Tell them!"

Julian turned his head, glaring at Adrian with pure, unadulterated hatred. "Shut your mouth, you idiot! You said she was a stupid, naive architect who wouldn't notice anything! You brought this whole federal nightmare on us!"
