Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Cards

The second federal agent approached Adrian, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
"Adrian Cole," the agent announced calmly, reading from a laminated card. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent—"
"WAIT!" Adrian shrieked, backing against the glass, his eyes wild with terror. He looked at me, tears of pure panic finally spilling down his pale cheeks. "Eleanor! Please! Tell them to stop! I love you! I swear to God I love you! Julian was manipulating me! He forced me into this! He threatened to ruin my career if I didn't help him!"
Julian let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "You pathetic liar! You came to me three years ago in California asking how to drain your wife's trust fund!"
"Eleanor, please!" Adrian sobbed, ignoring Julian, taking a desperate step toward me, holding out his hands. "We’re married! Think about our seven years together! Think about our home! I’ll give everything back! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just don't let them take me to prison!"
I stood entirely still, looking at the man I had shared a bed with for seven years.
I looked at his polished suit, his styled hair, his wet, desperate eyes, and I realized something profound: I didn't feel rage anymore. I didn't feel heartbreak. I felt nothing at all except a deep, profound sense of liberation.
"Do you remember what you told me at the airport, Adrian?" I asked softly, stepping closer so only he could hear my quiet, steady voice over the sound of the clicking handcuffs.
Adrian swallowed hard, trembling violently as the agent secured his left wrist. "El... please..."
"'She has no idea she's about to lose everything,'" I repeated his own words back to him, watching every muscle in his face collapse. "You were right, Adrian. Someone in our marriage was about to lose everything. You just picked the wrong person."
The federal agent clicked the second handcuff closed around Adrian’s right wrist, pulling his hands firmly behind his back.
"Let's go, Mr. Cole," the agent said roughly, guiding him toward the door.
As the agents led Julian and Adrian out into the marble hallway of the 12th floor, executive bank managers and legal staff lined the corridors, staring in shock as the two high-flying corporate raiders were paraded toward the elevator in steel restraints.
Adrian looked back over his shoulder one last time, his face pale, wet with tears, begging with his eyes for a shred of mercy that was never going to come.
I turned my back on him, picking up my phone from the conference table, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the mountains.
Evelyn walked up beside me, slipping her arm through mine. "Are you alright, my dear?"
May you like
I looked out at the brilliant autumn sunshine pouring over the city of Denver, taking a deep, clean breath of air into my lungs.
"I’ve never been better in my life, Evelyn," I smiled. "Now... let’s go clear his trash out of my father’s house."
