Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Two years later.

The late afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the rolling green hills of the Vale Estate.

A gentle breeze blew through the oak trees, rustling the leaves as a small, happy group gathered on the outdoor terrace overlooking the valley.

It was a quiet family afternoon. Sarah was setting up a small outdoor table with fresh pastries and fruit, while Evelyn sat under an umbrella, reviewing documents with a satisfied smile.

On the lawn below the terrace, three-year-old Maya was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Dad had bought her for her birthday. Her clear, musical laughter rang out across the open air, filling the estate with pure life.

I sat on the white stone bench, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea, watching my daughter play.

Dad walked out from the house, dressed in a simple linen shirt and trousers, holding a leather photo album. He sat beside me on the bench, opening the album across his knees.

The first page showed an old black-and-white photograph of my mother and father standing in front of their small apartment forty years ago, wearing simple clothes and laughing into the camera.

“You look more like her every day, Claire,” Dad said softly, his fingers tracing my mother’s smile in the photograph.

“I feel her here,” I murmured, looking at the gold band on my finger. “In everything we’ve built.”

Dad looked down at the lawn, watching Maya tumble into the grass, giggling hysterically as the puppy licked her cheek.

“Do you ever think about them?” Dad asked quietly. “Adrian? Eleanor?”

I paused, watching a butterfly flutter over the rose bushes.

“No,” I answered truthfully, turning my head to look at my father with absolute peace in my eyes. “I don't think about them at all. They lived in a tiny, dark room made of greed and fear. They thought they owned the world because they had a big house on a hill. But they never understood what the world actually was.”

Dad smiled, closing the album gently. “And what is the world, sweetheart?”

I reached out, taking my father’s hand, while Maya came running up the lawn toward us, her small arms outstretched, crying out, “Mommy! Grandpa! Look!”

I knelt down on the soft grass, opening my arms as my daughter collapsed into my lap, her warm, innocent heart beating against mine.

I looked out over the endless green hills, the bright blue sky, and the home filled with unconditional love.

“This,” I whispered, kissing Maya’s forehead as the golden sun set over the horizon. “This is the world.”
