Chapter 6 - The Press Conference

The grand atrium of Vale Tower in downtown Manhattan was packed with over three hundred journalists, television camera crews, and corporate observers.

At 12:00 PM precisely, the side doors opened.

I walked onto the raised mahogany stage wearing an elegant, tailored navy blue maternity dress, my mother’s ring shining on my hand. I walked without security guarding my front, standing tall, calm, and completely composed before the wall of flashing cameras.

Beside me stood Arthur Vale, dressed in his signature charcoal suit, standing three steps behind me to let me command the room.

I stepped up to the podium, looking directly into the primary lens of the national news cameras.

“Good afternoon,” I began, my voice clear and resonating through the high-ceilinged atrium. “My name is Claire Sterling Vale.”

The room erupted into frantic whispering, camera shutters clicking like a swarm of cicadas.

“For the past three years,” I continued, raising my hand to quiet the room, “I lived as Claire Hawthorne. I chose to keep my family heritage private when I married Adrian Hawthorne because I believed in a simple idea: that marriage should be built on love, mutual respect, and character—not balance sheets or social prestige.”

I paused, pressing a button on the podium’s control display.

The massive four-story LED screen behind me lit up.

It did not show financial documents or corporate press releases. It showed the high-definition security camera footage from the front porch of the Hawthorne estate during the storm.

The entire atrium went dead silent.

The audio played clearly through the building’s surround-sound system.

The journalists watched in utter shock as Adrian dragged me out into the pouring rain, barefoot and six months pregnant. They heard Eleanor hiss, “You trapped my son with that baby,” and watched in horrified silence as she spat directly into my face. They saw Vanessa laughing in my silk robe, throwing my baby’s ultrasound picture into the mud.

A collective gasp of absolute horror echoed through the three hundred reporters in the room.

“This is the reality of the man who went on television last night to claim he was a victim,” I said softly, as the video paused on the image of my ultrasound picture lying in the gutter. “Adrian Hawthorne did not lose his company because of my father’s money. He lost it because he committed grand larceny, embezzled his employees’ pensions, and treated human beings like garbage when he thought nobody was watching.”

I looked directly into the lead camera.

“My father did not destroy the Hawthornes,” I stated, my voice ringing with absolute authority. “He simply stopped protecting them from themselves.”

I tapped the podium again.

“Effective today,” I announced, “Vale Consolidated is creating the Sterling Maternal Health & Protection Foundation, endowed with a fifty-million-dollar fund dedicated to providing legal, financial, and housing assistance to victims of domestic abuse and economic coercion.”

The room remained silent for two seconds before a single journalist in the front row stood up and began to applaud.

Within five seconds, the entire atrium was on its feet, a thunderous ovation echoing through Vale Tower while the news cameras broadcasted Adrian Hawthorne’s total, public destruction to millions of households across the nation.
