Chapter 7 - The Arrest of Adrian Hawthorne

While the press conference was airing live across national television, federal agents were already executing a series of arrest warrants across the city.

In a dingy motel room near the industrial docks, Adrian sat on the edge of a stained mattress, staring at the small television set mounted on the wall.

He watched in frozen terror as my voice echoed from the screen, followed by the footage of his mother spitting in my face playing in crisp high-definition for forty million viewers.

“No... no...” Adrian whispered, his hands trembling violently as he tried to grab his coat. “This isn't happening... this can’t be happening...”

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The thin wooden door of the motel room buckled under heavy impact.

“Federal agents! Open the door!” a loud voice thundered from the hallway.

Adrian scrambled toward the bathroom window, trying to force the rusted frame upward, but before he could squeeze through, the front door was kicked off its hinges.

Four FBI agents burst into the room with weapons drawn, flanked by local police officers.

“Adrian Hawthorne!” the lead agent ordered, pinning Adrian against the cold tile floor of the bathroom. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement of pension funds, and tax evasion!”

As the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, Adrian wept pathetically into the dirty floor. “It was my mother! She made me do it! It was Vanessa! Please, call Claire! Tell her I’m sorry!”

The lead agent pulled Adrian to his feet, looking at him with utter disgust. “Mrs. Vale doesn't want to talk to you, Hawthorne. And neither does anyone else.”

Downstairs in the motel parking lot, news vans had already arrived, alerted by local police scanners.

As Adrian was led out in handcuffs, wearing a wrinkled shirt and dirty jeans, light flashes exploded in his face.

Standing behind the police barricade was his mother, Eleanor. She looked broken, her expensive clothes replaced by a cheap coat she had bought at a thrift store. She tried to rush toward her son, weeping hysterically, but police officers shoved her back behind the line.

“Adrian! Adrian, my boy!” Eleanor sobbed.

Adrian turned his head toward his mother, his face twisted into a mask of pure, bitter hatred. “Stay away from me!” he screamed at her in front of twenty news cameras. “This is your fault! You ruined my life! You spat on her! You destroyed everything!”

Eleanor collapsed onto the wet pavement, clutching her face as the police cruiser pulled away, taking her son to a federal holding cell where he would await trial.
