Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Hero

The boardroom of St. Jude Medical Center was lined with portraits of former chief surgeons and benefactors. Jack sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, looking pale, hollow-eyed, and completely broken. He was flanked by a public defender he had managed to secure at the last minute—a young, overworked lawyer who looked thoroughly overwhelmed by the stack of legal documents before him.
The board members were whispering among themselves as the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Harrison, cleared his throat.
"Dr. Walker," Dr. Harrison said, his voice heavy with disappointment. "The allegations brought against you by federal investigators regarding Apex Biometrics are severe. Furthermore, the land lease for this entire facility has been put in jeopardy due to your personal financial entanglements with Vance Capital."
"Dr. Harrison, please," Jack stammered, his voice trembling. "This is a personal vendetta by my ex-wife. She is using her family's money to destroy me! I am a world-class surgeon! I have brought millions of dollars in prestige to this hospital—"
The heavy oak doors at the back of the boardroom swung open.
Every head turned.
I walked in, dressed in a tailored charcoal-grey suit, my hair styled in a sleek chignon, carrying a slim leather folder. Behind me walked Gerald Vance and two senior corporate attorneys.
Jack gasped, pushing his chair back so hard it screeched against the carpet. "Megan?! What are you doing here?! Get her out! She’s not medical staff!"
Dr. Harrison stood up, bowing his head respectfully toward me. "Mrs. Vance-Walker. Thank you for joining us."
Jack froze. "Mrs... Vance?"
"As of nine o'clock this morning," Dr. Harrison announced to the room, "the Vance Foundation has converted its land lease into a controlling equity stake in St. Jude Medical Center. Mrs. Megan Vance is now the Chairwoman of the Board."
Jack’s eyes went wide. He collapsed back into his chair as if he had been struck by lightning.
I took my seat at the head of the table, directly opposite Jack. I opened my folder and looked at him calmly.
"Dr. Walker," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent room. "In light of the ongoing federal investigation into medical supply kickbacks, as well as evidence of deliberate patient endangerment involving sub-standard surgical equipment supplied by Apex Biometrics, this board has voted unanimously."
I looked around the room. Every board member nodded solemnly.
"Your medical staff privileges are revoked immediately," I continued. "Your employment is terminated for cause. And Vance Capital is filing a formal suit for asset recovery totaling four point two million dollars."
"Megan... please," Jack whispered, tears finally welling in his eyes. He reached out his hands across the table, his fingers trembling. "Don't do this to me. Medicine is my life. It's all I have."
"You should have thought about that before you told me you were saving a patient's life while buying airport margaritas with Chloe Montgomery," I said without a trace of emotion.

The public defender leaned over to Jack and whispered, "We need to leave. Now. Federal agents are waiting in the lobby."
As the marshals stepped into the boardroom to escort Jack out in handcuffs, he looked back at me one last time. The arrogant, confident man I had spent ten years loving was completely gone. In his place was a hollow shell of a man who had traded his entire future for an illusion.
