Chapter 6 - The Dominoes Fall

With Jack’s arrest, the rest of the Walker family crumbled like dry leaves in a storm.
Carol Walker was evicted from her Highland Park home three days later. Without Jack’s financial backing or her fraudulent Apex "consulting salary," she couldn't afford the property taxes, let alone the mortgage. Local news cameras caught the moment her designer furniture was stacked on the sidewalk, including the antique dining table where I had spent a decade serving her holiday meals.
Ashley’s boutique was permanently closed by court order. Facing civil liability as a listed officer of Apex Biometrics, she was forced to file for personal bankruptcy, her dream of being a high-society fashion owner crushed under the weight of her own greed.
Chloe Montgomery fared even worse. Faced with twenty years in federal prison for masterminding the kickback scheme, she agreed to a plea deal that turned state's evidence against Jack, putting the final nail in his legal coffin.
I sat in Gerald’s office two weeks later, reviewing the final divorce decree.
"He signed everything," Gerald said, sliding the signed papers across the table. "He gave up all claims to the house, the personal accounts, and any future alimony. His legal team knows he's going to serve at least five to seven years in federal prison. He has nothing left to fight with."
I picked up the pen. Ten years of marriage, condensed into a few sheets of paper.
I didn't feel rage anymore. I didn't even feel satisfaction. I felt a profound sense of relief—like stepping out of a dark, suffocating room into the bright morning sun.
I signed my name firmly at the bottom: MEGAN VANCE.
"What are you going to do now, Megan?" Gerald asked softly, looking at me with fatherly concern. "You’ve spent the last ten years hiding your talents, living in the shadow of a man who didn't deserve you."

I looked out the window at the city below. For ten years, I had shrunk myself to fit into Jack’s world. I had suppressed my intelligence, my ambition, and my family legacy just to keep the peace and be a "good wife."
"I'm going to rebuild," I said, a genuine smile spreading across my face for the first time in months. "Starting with myself."
