Chapter 1 - The Ledger of Blood and Gold

The silence in Courtroom 4B was absolute. Even the soft hum of the air conditioning seemed to die out, replaced by the collective, sharp intake of breath from the gallery.
Daniel Brooks, my attorney, didn't look at the press. He didn't look at the judge. His eyes were fixed on Jason, whose smug composure had completely shattered. The color had drained from my husband’s face, leaving him a sickly, ashen gray. Next to him, Madison’s manicured fingers dug into his arm so hard her knuckles turned white.
"What is the meaning of this?" Judge Evelyn Vance demanded, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. She leaned over her elevated mahogany bench, her sharp eyes scanning the jagged, raised tissue that mapped my shoulders and collarbone. "Mrs. Mitchell, this is a division of assets hearing. If there are allegations of physical abuse, they should have been filed under a separate criminal complaint or restraining order. Why are we seeing this now?"
"Because, Your Honor," Daniel stood up, adjusting his glasses with cool, practiced precision, "these scars are not merely the result of domestic abuse. They are the direct consequence of a corporate cover-up. The assets Mr. Mitchell claims are solely his—specifically the patent rights to Mitchell Medical Technologies' flagship surgical laser line, the Aegis-5—were built on a foundation of human experimentation, fraud, and the systematic destruction of my client’s physical and mental well-being."
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. The reporters, who had initially been brought in by Jason's PR team to document my public humiliation, were now furiously typing on their laptops. The flashes of their cameras cast harsh, strobe-like shadows across the courtroom walls.
"Objection!" Jason’s lead counsel, Richard Sterling, roared, slamming his hands onto the defense table. "This is a cheap, theatrical stunt designed to prejudice the court! Mrs. Mitchell’s injuries are the result of a tragic laboratory accident that occurred eight years ago—an accident for which she received a massive, confidential insurance settlement, which she voluntarily signed! This has absolutely no bearing on the prenuptial agreement or the division of Mitchell Medical's corporate shares!"
"Is that so, Mr. Sterling?" Daniel smiled, a cold, predatory expression. He opened his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick, black-bound ledger. "Let the record show that we are entering Exhibit A-1 into evidence. This is the original, unredacted research log from the Aegis-5 development phase, dated July 14, 2018."
Jason’s eyes widened. He took a half-step forward, his hands trembling. "Where... where did you get that? That's proprietary company property! That was destroyed!"
"Sit down, Mr. Mitchell," Judge Vance warned, her tone ice-cold.
"Your Honor," Daniel continued, his voice echoing off the high ceilings, "Mr. Mitchell has spent the last eight years telling the world—and the FDA—that the Aegis-5 laser was a marvel of modern medicine. But this log, hand-written by my client, Iris Mitchell, who was the lead biochemical engineer and co-founder of Mitchell Medical before her 'accident,' tells a very different story. It details how Jason Mitchell forced her to conduct human trials on herself when the prototype began malfunctioning, threatening to ruin their initial public offering. And when she refused, he locked her in the high-pressure testing chamber, deliberately overriding the safety protocols to simulate a 'spontaneous malfunction.'"
"You crazy bitch!" Jason screamed, losing all control. He lunged toward our table, but the bailiffs instantly stepped in, their hands resting on their holstered weapons. "She's lying! She set that fire herself! She was unstable!"
"Jason, shut up!" Sterling hissed, grabbing his client’s arm and dragging him back.
Madison looked horrified, not by the revelation of Jason’s cruelty, but by the sudden realization that the man she had hitched her wagon to was rapidly sinking. She shrank back, trying to distance herself from him, but the cameras caught every micro-expression.
"The ledger," Daniel said, handing a copy to the bailiff to pass to the judge, "contains not only the raw data of the radiation burns my client suffered, but also the signature of Jason Mitchell, authorizing the falsification of the subsequent safety reports. He used the insurance payout to force Iris into a private sanitarium under the guise of 'trauma recovery,' while he took her research, put his name on the patent, and built a multi-billion-dollar empire."
Judge Vance flipped through the pages of the ledger. Her face grew increasingly grim with every sheet she turned. The silence in the room returned, heavier and more suffocating than before.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said slowly, her eyes never leaving the document, "I suggest you and your client take a fifteen-minute recess. Because when we return, we are going to discuss why your client should not be remanded into custody immediately for corporate fraud, manufacturing of false evidence, and attempted murder."
Jason stumbled backward, his knees buckling slightly. He looked at me, pleadingly, desperately, searching for the submissive, broken woman he had terrorized for a decade.

But I only stared back, my eyes cold, my posture unbroken.
The game had finally changed.
