Chapter 8 - Justice is Served

The revelation of the forged medical reports was the final nail in Jason Mitchell's coffin.

Not only was the motion for a psychiatric remand denied, but the District Attorney immediately added charges of bribery, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to the indictment. Dr. Vance was arrested by Swiss authorities hours later, and he quickly turned state’s evidence, confessing that Jason had paid him to fabricate the neurological diagnosis.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When the verdict was read, the courtroom was packed to maximum capacity.

"On the charge of attempted first-degree murder, we find the defendant, Jason Mitchell... Guilty."

"On the charge of corporate fraud and manufacturing of false evidence... Guilty."

"On the charge of grand larceny... Guilty."

Jason didn't scream. He didn't cry. He simply sat there, staring blankly at the defense table, his mind finally registering the absolute finality of his defeat.

Judge Vance did not mince her words during sentencing.

"Mr. Mitchell, you are a predator who hid behind a facade of wealth, philanthropy, and scientific progress. You used your brilliant wife as a tool, and when she became inconvenient, you attempted to destroy her in the most horrific, painful way imaginable. Your actions are devoid of any basic human empathy."

"I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs led Jason away in handcuffs, he stopped in front of my table. For a brief second, his eyes met mine. He looked small. He looked broken.

"Iris..." he whispered, his voice cracking. "Please..."

I didn't say a word. I simply turned my back on him, walking out of the courtroom into the bright, warm afternoon sun.
