Chapter 15 - The Shadows on Pier 14

The fog over the East River was so thick that the towering outline of the Manhattan Bridge looked like a ghostly skeleton floating in grey clouds.

At 5:30 AM, Pier 14 was dark, quiet, and wrapped in the smell of salt water, rust, and old diesel fuel.

An unmarked black speedboat glided silently through the dark water beneath the pier cleats, its twin electric motors emitting no more than a low, muffled hum.

Aleandro cut the power, allowing the boat to drift smoothly into the shadow of the massive wooden support pillars beneath the pier structure.

Beside him, Mia lowered a pair of thermal night-vision goggles over her eyes, scanning the iron catwalks thirty feet above their heads.

"Four thermal signatures on the main deck," Mia reported in a whisper over her tactical earpiece. "Two snipers on the crane tower, two roving guards near the warehouse entrance. They're equipped with military-grade night vision and automatic weapons."

Aleandro checked the action on his suppressed MP5 submachine gun. "Mercer's private security contractor. Former French Foreign Legion."

"Where is the vault entrance?" Aleandro asked.

"Beneath the old pump room," Mia replied, pointing toward a rusted iron ladder extending from the water up into the floor of the pier foundation. "There's a submerged hatch six feet below the waterline. My father built it so it could only be accessed during low tide."

Aleandro checked his dive watch. 5:42 AM. "Low tide is in twelve minutes."

"I'm going up to clear the snipers," Aleandro decided, reaching for a tactical climbing harness. "You take the hatch."

"No," Mia stopped him, taking his arm. "We stay together, Aleandro. No more splitting up. That's how Marco got close to Harper."

Aleandro looked into her eyes, seeing the immovable resolve behind her gray gaze. He nodded once. "Together."

They attached silently to the rusted iron ladder, ascending into the dark framing beneath the pier deck like two ghosts moving through the mist.

They reached the floor of the old pump room. The space was filled with rusted machinery, shattered glass, and pools of stagnant salt water.

Through a crack in the wooden wall, Aleandro watched two guards in black tactical gear pacing past the doorway, holding rifles equipped with tactical suppressors.

Aleandro held up three fingers, then two, then one.

He stepped out from the shadows, firing two precise, three-round bursts from his suppressed MP5.

Pfft-pfft-pfft! Pfft-pfft-pfft!

Both guards collapsed instantly onto the wet planks without making a sound.

Aleandro and Mia dragged the bodies into the pump room, securing their weapons and comms gear.

In the center of the concrete pump room floor sat a heavy, round iron hatch, covered in forty years of rust and sea salt, secured with a massive three-dial mechanical vault lock.

Mia dropped to her knees beside the hatch, pulling the tarnished iron key from her neck chain.

She inserted the key into the central keyhole, turning it ninety degrees to the left. A loud, heavy CLICK echoed through the concrete floor, followed by the deep, mechanical grinding of internal iron tumblers releasing after twenty years of silence.

Aleandro grabbed the iron wheel on the hatch, pulling with all his strength.

With a shower of rusted flakes and cold salt air, the iron hatch swung open, revealing a vertical concrete shaft leading down into total darkness.

From the depths of the shaft, the distinct sound of a man clapping hands echoed upward.

"Bravo," a cultured, arrogant voice called out from the dark below. "Right on schedule, Donna Moretti."

Aleandro immediately raised his weapon, aiming down the shaft into the dark.

A bright spotlight clicked on at the bottom of the shaft, blinding them instantly.

"I wouldn't pull that trigger, Don Moretti," Julian Mercer’s voice called out smoothly. "Unless you want the six hundred pounds of C4 wired to the main support columns of Pier 14 to detonate instantly."
