Chapter 18 - The Clearing Sky

Three months later.

The autumn sun shone bright and golden over the Hudson Valley, painting the ancient oak trees of the Moretti estate in brilliant hues of deep red, burnt orange, and rich amber.

The heavy security gates at the perimeter entrance were open wide. The armed guards in tactical gear were gone, replaced by two polite, uniformed gatekeepers who tipped their hats to visiting cars.

On the grand lawn where the paper lanterns had once hung, a massive white canvas marquee tent had been erected for a community celebration.

Children from the nearby village ran across the grass, playing tag under the bright autumn sky, their laughter echoing off the marble steps of the estate.

At the head of a long wooden table set under the oak trees sat David Vance, playing chess with fourteen-year-old Nico. Nico was grinning, having just trapped David's king in a clever knight-fork maneuver.

"You learned that from Carmine," David groaned, shaking his head with fond amusement, knocking his king over onto the wooden board.

"Carmine learned it from a Sicilian prison warder thirty years ago," Carmine shouted from nearby, where he was supervising the roasting of a whole pig over an open pit fire, a glass of dark red wine in his hand.

In the center of the lawn, five-year-old Harper was sitting on a soft wool blanket, wearing a bright purple sweater, carefully arranging fallen maple leaves into a circle.

Mia walked out onto the marble terrace, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater of warm cream and comfortable wool trousers. Her dark hair was tied back in a loose braid, her face glowing with radiant health, joy, and deep, permanent peace.

Aleandro walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"The final papers arrived from Geneva this morning," Aleandro whispered into her ear, smelling the familiar, wonderful scent of jasmine in her hair. "The Valenti legal entity has been legally dissolved forever. The harbor properties in Palermo have been transferred to a public park foundation named after your mother."

Mia turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck, looking into his dark, warm eyes.

"And Pier 14?" she asked softly.

"Reconstruction begins next month," Aleandro smiled. "It's going to be a community marine education center. Nico wants to do his summer internship there."

Mia let out a long, quiet breath—a breath she felt as if she had been holding since she was five years old in Palermo.

She looked out over the lawn at her children, her friends, her family—people who had walked through the valley of shadow and blood and had emerged on the other side into the pure, unblemished light of a new day.

"Look at them, Aleandro," she whispered, tears of joy sparkling in her gray eyes. "No fear. No shadows."

"Only light, mia colomba," Aleandro replied, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a long, sweet, and unconditional kiss.
