Chapter 17 - The Breach from Above

Tactical flashbang grenades rained down from the open ceiling shaft, detonating in a blinding, deafening storm of white light and thunderous concussions.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The security guards were instantly disoriented, clutching their eyes and ears as white smoke filled the concrete room.
Down the iron ladders bolted two dozen elite tactical operators dressed in black urban camouflage bearing the crest of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Organized Crime Task Force, led personally by David Vance and Carmine Lucchese.
"FBI! Don't move! Drop your weapons! Drop your weapons now!" the tactical leader roared through his gas mask.
Mercer’s security guards dropped their rifles immediately, raising their hands and dropping to their knees in the smoke.
Mercer lay on the floor, weeping in pain, clutching his broken wrist as an FBI agent slammed him face-down onto the concrete and clicked heavy steel handcuffs behind his back.
In the center of the room, amidst the swirling white smoke and flashing red tactical lights, Mia remained standing behind Bernardo’s chair, her fingers steady on the silver pistol pressed against the old man's throat.
Aleandro stood beside her, his MP5 lowered, watching the old monster in the chair.
Bernardo didn't panic. He didn't cry out. He simply looked up at Mia with his single, sightless white eye, a terrifying, crooked smile spreading across his burned face.
"Do it, niece," Bernardo rasped softly, his breath smelling of blood and decay. "Shoot me. Finish what your weak father couldn't do twenty years ago. Show them you are a true Valenti."
Mia stared at the man who had ordered her mother's execution, the man who had kept her locked in a dark room for years, the man who had sent a traitor to attack her innocent four-year-old daughter six hours ago.
Her finger tightened on the silver trigger.
The room went completely silent. Even the tactical agents stopped screaming, their weapons trained on Mia and Bernardo, waiting for her decision.
Aleandro stepped up beside her. He didn't grab her hand. He didn't demand that she stop. He simply stood beside her, offering his presence, his unconditional love, and his eternal support.
"Mia," Aleandro whispered softly, his voice cutting through the noise in her heart like a gentle summer wind. "Look at your hands."
Mia looked down at her hands holding the silver gun.
Her fingers were scarred—scarred from the concrete cellar where Bernardo had left her to die years ago, but also decorated with the delicate gold signet ring Aleandro had placed on her finger under the summer stars at the estate.
Those hands had built a garden. Those hands had held little Harper when she cried. Those hands had caught fireflies in a mason jar with Nico.
If she pulled that trigger, Bernardo won. He would transform her back into a monster of Palermo.
Slowly, deliberately, Mia clicked the safety back onto the silver pistol. She pulled the barrel away from Bernardo's throat and tossed the weapon onto the concrete floor at David Vance's feet.
"You're not worth my soul, Bernardo," Mia said, her voice clear, beautiful, and utterly unbroken. "You're just a sick old man dying in a dark room."
Bernardo’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, agonizing defeat.
Two FBI agents stepped forward, pulling the old man from his chair, securing his arms behind his back, dragging him away toward the ladder.
David Vance walked over to Mia and Aleandro, looking at the massive wall of ledgers behind the glass.
"The federal court sealed the vault five minutes ago," David reported, handing Aleandro a signed judicial document. "The entire ledger is being transferred into a international protective custody vault in Geneva. It will be used to dismantle every illegal syndicate network in Western Europe over the next five years."
"And us?" Aleandro asked, looking David straight in the eye.
David smiled faintly, pulling a thick brown folder from his coat and handing it to Aleandro.
"The Federal prosecutor officially closed the file on the Moretti estate twenty minutes ago," David revealed. "Full immunity, complete legal clearance, and permanent sealed status for your family. You are officially, completely, and permanently clean, Don Moretti."
Aleandro took the folder, looking down at the official federal stamp that declared their freedom absolute.

He turned to Mia, pulling her into his arms, holding her close as the smoke slowly cleared from the subterranean room.
"It's over, Mia," Aleandro whispered, kissing her forehead. "It's really over."
