Chapter 3 - The Smear Campaign

Forty-eight hours after the incident in my backyard, my phone began vibrating incessantly during my morning executive briefing. It was my Vice President of Public Relations, Marcus.
"Clara, we have a situation," Marcus said, his tone strained. "You need to log onto local social media channels immediately. Something is trending locally, and it’s gaining national traction rapidly."
I opened my laptop, typed in the search parameters, and felt a cold spike of adrenaline hit my chest.
It was a three-minute video recorded in front of the manicured lawn of 442 Maple Drive. Evelyn sat on the porch steps, wearing a frayed cardigan, her hair deliberately disheveled. Joanna sat beside her, sobbing hysterically while holding little Harper, who looked thoroughly confused.
"I am appealing to the heart of the community," Evelyn wept to the camera, dabbing her eyes with a wrinkled tissue. "My daughter, Clara Sterling—CEO of Sterling Global Consulting—has completely abandoned us. After years of us sacrificing everything to raise her and help build her career, she has suddenly cut off all support. She called the police on her own family, issued an eviction notice to throw her elderly mother onto the street, and left her young niece without basic necessities—all because of a tiny misunderstanding over a children's toy."
The video was edited with dramatic music and slow-motion shots of the eviction notice affixed to the front door. The caption read: “Cruel Corporate CEO Evicts Elderly Mother and Toddler Niece. Share to Demand Justice!”
The comment section was an absolute toxic wasteland:
"Monster! How can anyone treat their own mother like this?"
"Boycott Sterling Global Consulting! She has no morals!"
"Her poor niece! Cut off her income and kick her out!"
Within four hours, the video reached over two million views. By noon, two major corporate clients sent formal emails expressing "deep concern over public brand alignment" and requesting emergency conference calls.
At 2:00 PM, my administrative assistant knocked hesitantly on my office door. "Clara... there’s a news crew from Channel 7 in the lobby. They’re demanding an interview regarding the allegations made by your mother."
I stared at the computer screen where the video was still accumulating thousands of outraged comments. Marcus paced back and forth across my office floor.
"We need to issue a statement immediately, Clara," Marcus urged. "Something diplomatic. 'This is a private family matter, we ask for privacy during this difficult time...' Standard damage control."
"No," I said firmly, standing up from behind my desk.
Marcus stopped dead in his tracks. "No? Clara, our stock valuation is taking a hit on regional boards. Clients are threatening to cancel retainer contracts."
"If we issue a vague PR apology, we look guilty," I explained calmly, my mind functioning with mathematical precision. "My mother staged a theatrical performance because she knows the public loves a villain-versus-victim narrative. She expects me to panic, offer her a massive settlement, and restore her allowance to make this go away."
"So what do we do?" Marcus asked.
"We give them the real narrative," I replied, leaning over my desk and opening a secure cloud folder. "Marcus, I have every single transaction log from the past eight years. I have bank statements showing $18,000 transferred every single month to Evelyn Sterling and Joanna Sterling. I have invoices for luxury cars, designer clothes, country club fees, and five-star vacations that I personally paid for."
I pulled up a second folder.
"And here," I continued, "is the crystal-clear, high-definition 4K security footage from my home security system five days ago. It shows my mother calling 911 on a terrified five-year-old child, screaming at officers to 'take her away.' And here is yesterday's footage of my mother arriving with a sledgehammer, attempting to smash my child’s playhouse to pieces while screaming obscenities."

Marcus stared at the screen, his mouth slightly open as the audio played out from the security footage—Evelyn’s unhinged shrieks filling the room, contrasting sharply with her fragile, weeping demeanor in the viral video.
"This isn't just family drama, Marcus," I said coldly. "This is extortion, fraud, and defamation. Prepare a press package. We aren't issuing a defensive statement. We are hosting a live press conference tomorrow morning."
