Chapter 6 - Desperate Measures

The morning sun filtered brightly through the large oak trees surrounding St. Jude’s Elementary School. It was a private kindergarten located ten miles from my home, renowned for its academic excellence and quiet, upscale environment.

I had personally briefed the school principal, Mrs. Gable, three days prior regarding the temporary restraining order. I had provided physical copies of the court order, photographs of Evelyn and Joanna, and explicit instructions that no one other than myself or my vetted personal assistant was authorized to pick up Maisie under any circumstances.

"You have nothing to worry about, Ms. Sterling," Mrs. Gable had assured me with absolute confidence. "Our campus security is top-tier. All visitors must scan their ID at the main gate."

However, Evelyn knew how to exploit human nature. She knew that systems were only as strong as the people operating them.

At 1:45 PM—fifteen minutes before the afternoon dismissal bell—a sleek silver sedan pulled up to the side perimeter fence of the school campus, away from the main security guard shack.

Joanna remained in the driver’s seat, her engine idling, her hands sweating profusely on the steering wheel. She wore dark sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Evelyn stepped out of the passenger side. She was wearing a neatly tailored coat, her hair styled neatly, looking every bit the picture of a refined, wealthy grandmother. In her hands, she carried a large, plush teddy bear and a box of expensive cupcakes.

She walked toward the secondary pedestrian gate, where a junior administrative aide was supervising the kindergarten playground duty.

"Hello dear," Evelyn said softly through the wrought-iron fence, putting on her warmest, most innocent grandmotherly smile.

The young aide, a college student named Sarah who had only started working at the school two weeks prior, turned around. "Oh, hello! Can I help you? Pick-up isn't for another fifteen minutes, and all guests must check in at the front office."

"Oh, I know, sweetie," Evelyn lied smoothly, lowering her voice into a conspiratorial whisper. "I'm Maisie Sterling's grandmother. Her mother, Clara, had an unexpected emergency at her office today and asked me to swing by early to pick her up. I brought these cupcakes for her class, but Clara said I could just take her home directly."

Sarah hesitated. "Um... let me check the approved pickup list on my tablet..."

"Of course, of course," Evelyn said, opening her designer handbag and pulling out a framed photo of herself holding Maisie when Maisie was a baby. "Look how tiny she was! Clara was running so fast to her meeting she forgot to call the front desk, but you know how chaotic corporate life is. I just want to spare the poor little girl the distress of waiting."

Sarah looked at the adorable photo, then looked at the polished, sweet-looking elderly woman holding a giant teddy bear. Her guard dropped slightly. "Well... let me just walk over to the classroom and call her out—"

"Thank you so much, dear, you're an angel," Evelyn said softly, stepping closer to the gate latch as Sarah reached for her keys.

What Evelyn didn't know was that two minutes earlier, my private security detail—a former federal agent named Marcus Vance whom I had hired to discreetly monitor the school perimeter—had spotted the idling silver sedan parked illegally near the side fence.

Sitting in my corporate office miles away, my phone suddenly flashed with an urgent high-priority alert from Vance's direct encrypted line.

I answered on the first ring. "Vance, what's happening?"

"Clara, we have a breach attempt," Vance's voice was crisp, urgent, and focused. "Your mother is at the east pedestrian fence of the school talking to an administrative aide. Your sister is in a getaway vehicle around the corner. I am moving in now."

Cold terror instantly converted into blinding, decisive fury. "Stop them. Do not let them touch my daughter."
