Chapter 7 - The School Incident

On the playground, Sarah inserted her key into the pedestrian gate lock to allow Evelyn onto campus property.

"Maisie!" Sarah called out toward the covered porch where the kindergarten class was gathering their backpacks. "Maisie Sterling, your grandma is here!"

Little Maisie turned around. The moment her eyes landed on Evelyn standing at the gate holding the plush bear, her tiny face went completely white. The memory of five days ago—the police officers, the harsh shouting, the terrible words—flooded back instantly.

"No!" Maisie screamed, backing away into the classroom doorway, clutching her small backpack against her chest. "No! I don't want to go! Mommy said no!"

Sarah froze, surprised by the child's extreme reaction. "Maisie, sweetie, what's wrong? It's your grand—"

"Step away from the gate immediately!" a commanding voice boomed across the yard.

Marcus Vance sprinted across the lawn, flashing a high-grade security credential while holding his phone on speaker. Behind him, two uniform security guards from the school’s main gate came rushing down the corridor at full speed.

Evelyn’s sweet, innocent demeanor shattered instantly. Realizing her deception was exposed, she reached through the opening fence door, grabbing Sarah's arm forcefully and trying to pull the gate open herself.

"Give me the child!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice turning sharp and feral. "I am her grandmother! I have a right to see her!"

"Get off me!" Sarah yelled, terrified, stumbling backward and snatching the gate key out of the lock.

Vance reached the gate in two long strides. He gripped Evelyn’s wrist with firm, professional precision, removing her hand from the latch and stepping between her and the playground.

"Evelyn Sterling," Vance said coldly, pulling out a laminated document. "You are in direct violation of a court-issued temporary restraining order, Docket Number 4409. You are within five hundred yards of Clara Sterling's daughter."

"Get your hands off me, you glorified security guard!" Evelyn screamed, thrashing wildly. "Joanna! Drive up! Get over here!"

Around the corner, hearing the commotion, Joanna panicked. Instead of helping her mother, she slammed her foot on the accelerator, tires screeching as her silver sedan sped away down the street, abandoning Evelyn on the curb.

"Joanna! You cowardly idiot!" Evelyn roared, watching her daughter flee.

Within three minutes, the sharp, wailing sirens of municipal police cruisers echoed down the quiet suburban street. Two patrol cars pulled up onto the school curb, lights flashing brightly.

I arrived at the school fifteen minutes later, my car stopping right behind the police cruisers. I sprinted through the front gates, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

When I reached the principal's office, Maisie was sitting on a plush couch, sipping a juice box while Mrs. Gable gently patted her back. The moment Maisie saw me walk through the door, she dropped her juice box and ran into my arms.

"Mommy! Mommy!" she sobbed, burying her face into my neck.

I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms around her so tightly I could feel her rapid heartbeat against mine. "I'm here, baby. I'm right here. You're safe. I've got you."

Outside the window, through the glass pane, I watched the police officers placing heavy steel handcuffs onto Evelyn’s wrists. She was screaming obscenities at the officers, her face red and swollen with humiliation, as parents picking up their children stopped and stared in utter shock.

The lead officer walked into the office, his expression grave.

"Ms. Sterling," the officer said, taking off his cap. "Your mother has been taken into custody. She is being charged with Felony Attempted Parental Abduction, Criminal Trespass on School Grounds, Assault on a School Employee, and aggravated violation of a Restraining Order. Because she violated a protective order involving a minor, there will be no bail option until she appears before a magistrate judge."

I looked down at Maisie, who was quietly holding my thumb with her small hand.

"Press every single charge," I said softly to the officer. "Do not drop a single one."
