Chapter 10 - A Beautiful New Day

Six months later, the warmth of summer had returned.

The garden in my backyard was in full bloom, filled with bright yellow sunflowers and purple lavender. The air was sweet with the scent of a barbecue cooking on the grill.

I sat on the patio deck, sipping a glass of iced tea, watching the scene unfold in front of me. Charlotte was running through the backyard sprinkler, her loud, joyous laughter ringing through the afternoon air. She was wearing a bright pink swimsuit, her skin glowing with health and happiness.

Running right beside her was Nora.

After Kendra had left our mother, she had kept her word. She had found a job at a local library and secured a small, peaceful apartment for herself and her daughter. It hadn't been easy for her, but without our mother’s toxic influence, Kendra had finally grown up. We were slowly, carefully rebuilding a relationship, entirely on new terms—no money involved, just two sisters letting their daughters grow up together as cousins should.

Charlotte dashed through the water, splashing Nora, who shrieked with delight. There were no tears, no hidden agendas, and no fear.

"Mommy! Watch this!" Charlotte yelled, doing a clumsy but energetic cartwheel onto the grass. She landed on her bottom, laughing hysterically, completely covered in grass stains and water.

"Beautiful, bunny!" I called out, waving to her.

I looked down at my hands, completely still and relaxed. The dark nights of anxiety were gone. The legal bills were paid, the boundary lines were carved in stone, and my mother’s threats had faded into absolute irrelevance.

I had spent years trying to buy love and peace from people who only saw me as a source of income. In the end, it didn't cost a single dollar to find real peace. It just required the courage to stand up, close the checkbook, and protect the light of my life.

Charlotte ran up the patio steps, dripping wet, and threw her arms around my waist, leaving a giant wet patch on my shirt.

"I love you, Mommy," she murmured, burying her face in my side.

May you like

I wrapped my arms around her tightly, kissing the top of her damp head, feeling the steady, safe beat of her heart.

"I love you more, bunny," I whispered. "Always and forever."
