Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

After the disastrous deposition, my mother’s case began to disintegrate rapidly. Realizing that they were facing an uphill battle and a potential counter-suit that could ruin them financially, Phyllis’s lawyer advised her to withdraw the petition for custody.
But my mother’s pride wouldn't allow her to surrender completely. Instead of backing down, she turned to the court of public opinion. She began spreading vicious rumors among our extended family, claiming I was an ungrateful daughter who was leaving her elderly mother to freeze without electricity and forcing her niece onto the streets.
One evening, my Aunt Susan called me, her voice full of judgment.
"Mallerie, how can you do this?" Susan asked. "Your mother is in tears. She says you're suing her and cutting off her utility money. She’s your mother, Mallerie. Family supports each other."
I took a deep breath, determined not to let the guilt-tripping work anymore. "Aunt Susan, did Mom tell you why I cut her off?"
"She said you had a disagreement about how to raise Charlotte..."
"She called the police on Charlotte," I interrupted, my voice trembling with controlled anger. "She called two armed officers to the house to terrify my five-year-old daughter because she pushed Nora over a toy. And then she threatened to take my daughter away from me if I didn't keep paying Kendra's car loan. I have the police report and the court documents to prove it. Would you like me to email them to you?"
Silence greeted me on the other end of the line.
"She... she called the police on a baby?" Susan whispered, shocked.
May you like
"Yes. And she admitted in her deposition that she wanted to 'break' my daughter's spirit. If you want to support her, Susan, that is your choice. But do not call me to lecture me about family when my mother tried to destroy mine."
I hung up. Within days, the rumors stopped. Aunt Susan had apparently shared the truth with the rest of the family, and one by one, my mother’s relatives began to distance themselves from her. The isolation she had tried to inflict on me was now wrapping around her.
