Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Alliance

While the legal battle brewed, the financial reality of my departure began to tear my family apart. Without my funds, the fragile house of cards Kendra and my mother lived in began to collapse.
Through a mutual cousin, I learned that Kendra’s car had indeed been repossessed. Without the vehicle, she couldn't take Nora to her private preschool, resulting in a massive argument between Kendra and our mother. Kendra blamed Mom for escalating the situation with the police, while Mom blamed Kendra for being lazy and incapable of supporting herself.
One evening, my phone rang from an unknown number. I answered it, expecting a telemarketer. Instead, it was Kendra’s sobbing voice.
"Mallerie? Please don't hang up."
I hesitated, my hand hovering over the end-call button. "What do you want, Kendra?"
"Mom is out of her mind," Kendra wept. "She’s spending all her savings on this lawyer to fight you. She told me I have to move out of my apartment and move in with her because we can't afford my rent anymore. Mallerie, please. I didn't want to call the police on Charlotte. That was all Mom! She forced me to agree with her. She said it would keep you in line."
A profound sense of disgust filled me. "You stood there, Kendra. You held Nora and let my daughter believe she was going to jail. You lied and said she hit Nora."
"I was scared!" Kendra cried. "Mom threatened to cut me off too if I didn't back her up! Please, Mallerie, if you just pay the back rent on my apartment, I’ll tell the judge that Mom lied about everything. I’ll testify for you!"
I closed my eyes, amazed at how transactional my own sister could be. Even now, trapped in the mess of her own making, she was trying to sell her loyalty for a check.

"No, Kendra," I said coldly. "You chose your side when you let Mom terrorize my child. If you want to tell the truth to the judge, do it because it’s the right thing to do. But you will not get another dime from me. Figure out your own life."
I hung up before she could respond. The alliance was fracturing, and the truth was beginning to leak through the cracks.
